Birdland, one of New York’s most iconic jazz clubs, has opened a new 100 seat performance space called Birdland Theater. At At Broadway, we bring you the latest updates on what kind of shows you can expect at this brand new venue.
Birdland Theater and Its Collaboration with Broadway
New York is home to legendary jazz venues such as Blue Note, Village Vanguard, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Birdland, founded in the 1940s, stands proudly among them as one of the city’s great historic jazz clubs.
Located below the main Birdland club, the new Birdland Theater offers a more intimate setting with a capacity of 100 seats, compared to the 200 seat main room upstairs. The warm retro inspired interior makes it an approachable and inviting space for jazz lovers. In addition to regular jazz programming, the venue will welcome special guest performers from July through November.
The Historic Birdland Jazz Club
Birdland originally opened on West 52nd Street in 1949 during the golden age of jazz. It was named after the legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker, whose nickname was “Bird.”Although the club closed in 1965, it reopened twenty years later on West 106th Street before relocating to its current address at 315 W 44th Street. Over the decades, Birdland has hosted many of the greatest names in jazz history, including Lester Young, Miles Davis, and Count Basie.
Birdland Theater is also expected to become a home for select Broadway related performances, making it a rare venue where visitors can enjoy both world class jazz and theatrical programming.
