Let’s get straight to the point. If you are still within your first two weeks after arriving in New York, a Broadway matinee can be seriously tough.
Some of the staff members who run this site travel back and forth between Japan and New York. I, Ogata, am one of them.
For travelers visiting New York, how do you feel about daytime performances? Matinees can be surprisingly hard, can’t they?
Even when I sleep well the night before, rest until around 10:00 AM on the day of the show, and drink plenty of coffee, a 2:00 PM performance often turns into two and a half hours of fighting sleep. I have gone through this more times than I can count.
Many travelers seem to experience an overwhelming wave of sleepiness that is almost impossible to resist between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM in New York, which is around 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM in Japan. This is not just my own experience. It is something I often hear from customers and friends as well.
In other words, when it comes to seeing a Broadway show, we recommend choosing an evening performance whenever possible. During the day, it may be better to schedule active plans, or take a short nap before your evening show so you can enjoy the performance more comfortably.
Of course, we completely understand that travel schedules tend to fill up quickly. It is not easy to suggest changing plans when every moment of a trip feels precious. Still, we want your Broadway experience to be as wonderful as possible. This is one very heartfelt piece of advice from our staff.
P.S. If you are worried about getting sleepy during the show, it may help to bring a small sour candy or refreshing gum with you.
