Why Hamilton topped the list
The top-grossing show this week was “Hamilton.” Although the show sold fewer seats than “Wicked” (10,755 seats for Hamilton vs. 14,974 for Wicked), Hamilton’s much higher average ticket price (from about $350 up to $849) pushed its weekly gross well past Wicked’s (~$160 average ticket). That large gap in ticket price drove Hamilton’s strong performance.
Disney musicals remain dominant
The three Disney-backed Broadway productions – “The Lion King” (rank 2), “Frozen” (rank 5), and “Aladdin” (rank 6) – all secured spots in the top 10. “Frozen,” which opened March 22, 2018, made strong early gains but could not surpass “The Lion King,” which has logged over 8,700 performances and remains an enduring draw.
Long-running classics still attract
Celebrating its 30th year since opening in 1988, “The Phantom of the Opera” ranked 9 this week. Even after decades on stage, it continues to perform strongly, with steady ticket pricing (average ~$120, top ~$250) that keeps it accessible while achieving high grosses.
