A video where current Chicago cast members teach the choreography for “All That Jazz

Musical Chicago

When it comes to Broadway classics, “Chicago” stands at the top. Famous for its sleek, sensual choreography loved by all genders, this musical is set in Prohibition-era Chicago during the so-called Jazz Age. In this feature, the show’s current dance captain, David Bushman, explains his approach to the production and its choreography. After the interview, he even breaks down the iconic moves from “All That Jazz,” so be sure to watch the video through to the end.

Dance captain: David Bushman

David Bushman Trained across classical, contemporary, and modern styles, David discovered dance in high school. After more than 17 years honing his craft, he joined the 2003 French-language engagement of “Chicago” in Paris and Montreal, which began his long connection with the show. He then spent three years on the national tour as an ensemble member before being appointed dance captain for the Broadway production. His favorite number is the Act Two opener, “Me and My Baby.”

Q&A with the dance captain

Q: What does a dance captain do?

A: I am responsible for maintaining the choreography at a consistent level throughout the run and for teaching new company members their tracks.

Q: In your view, what is the purpose of choreography?

Chicago continues its long Broadway run with irresistibly sultry choreography Every gesture has meaning, down to the smallest movement. I am always thinking about how the audience will respond. “Chicago” is dialogue-driven, but the story also advances through Bob Fosse-style choreography, so the movement is crucial. For that reason, our dance rehearsals run six days a week for about eight hours a day.

Q: “Chicago” has played on Broadway for more than two decades. What would you tell someone who still has not seen it yet, and why should they go now?

Watch for the dancers’ refined, fluid precision A: One unique trait is that it is very much a Fosse show and also a kind of star-maker. Even repeat visitors often find the principals have changed since their last visit. Because the choreography allows room for nuance, different dancers reveal different shades of the story, so it can feel like seeing a new production. That is why both first-timers and regulars keep coming back.

Chicago choreography lesson: “All That Jazz”

In this video, current Broadway performers Pillar Millhollen and Daniel Gutierrez join David to teach the choreography to “All That Jazz,” the show’s signature opening number.

The lesson starts at 2:24. Think liquid for the undulating lines, exhale as you slowly let the arms fall, and hit the freezes with crisp control. It is classic jazz shaded for grown-up sophistication.
