The long-running Broadway sensation “Chicago” has been performing at the Ambassador Theatre since October 23, 1996. In our previous article (published on November 28, 2018), we celebrated its 22nd anniversary and more than 9,000 performances, featuring cast updates and musical highlights. This time, we’ll take a look at the global reach of Chicago and where it’s being performed around the world in 2019.

Set in the jazz-fueled 1920s during the Prohibition era, “Chicago” follows the free-spirited Roxie Hart through a story of fame, scandal, and seduction. Originally premiering on Broadway in 1975 and revived in 1996, the show became a global hit, winning five Tony Awards out of seven nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical.
Since its revival, Chicago has been performed in 34 countries, 473 cities, and 12 languages worldwide. It first toured Japan in 1999 and later returned in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007 for encore performances.Notably, Japanese actress Ryoko Yonekura made history by starring as Roxie Hart on Broadway in both 2012 and 2017, becoming the first Japanese performer to do so, and she is set to return again in summer 2019. Today, beyond its Broadway and North American tours, Chicago continues to captivate audiences with limited-run productions in 12 cities across 6 countries worldwide.
