The Broadway revival of the classic film My Fair Lady is currently being performed at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The Broadway-exclusive cast album, featuring members of the 72nd Tony Award-nominated company, was released on June 8, 2018. The album includes 29 tracks performed by a full orchestra. Among them is The Rain in Spain, and the production has released a behind-the-scenes look at the recording session.
About The Rain in Spain
My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young flower seller from London’s East End who is taken in by Professor Henry Higgins and trained to speak and behave like a lady of high society. The Rain in Spain appears during a pivotal moment in which Higgins drills Eliza on pronunciation. The words “Spain” and “rain,” difficult for Eliza due to her Cockney accent, become key exercises in her transformation.
Eliza’s Cockney dialect makes it hard for her to distinguish certain vowel sounds, including “ei” and “ai.” Instead of the correct line “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain,” she pronounces it as “The line in Spine sties minely in the pline.” The famous phrase is a training sentence invented by Higgins, and after intense practice Eliza finally masters the pronunciation, marking a breakthrough in her lessons.
