Hello! This is Ikeda from the editorial team. On November 21, I had the chance to see the very first preview performance of the Broadway musical Gypsy. Yes, on opening night itself!
The show was announced with almost no advance publicity, so it truly felt like a “first reveal,” and I headed to the theater with great anticipation.
I’ll share my impressions of watching the performance at the Majestic Theatre, a venue fondly remembered for The Phantom of the Opera, surrounded by excited theater fans.

Overview of the Broadway musical Gypsy
This production is a revival of one of the most celebrated musicals in American theater history. First staged on Broadway in 1959, it is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famed burlesque star. The story portrays, with humor and deep emotion, the struggles, growth, and self-discovery of Rose and her daughters. The lead role of Rose has long been known as one of the most demanding parts on Broadway, previously played by legendary performers. Ethel Merman, who originated the role, was hailed as the “Queen of Broadway” during the golden age of the 1950s. Other acclaimed actresses, including Angela Lansbury of Sweeney Todd fame, have also taken on this iconic role.
In the 2024 revival, Audra McDonald, six-time Tony Award winner, known for productions like Carousel, takes the stage. With her soaring soprano and exceptional artistry, McDonald’s return to Broadway makes this revival one of the most highly anticipated events of the season.
Broadway musical Gypsy story
Set in America after the Great Depression, the story follows Rose, a determined stage mother who dreams of turning her daughters into stars of the vaudeville stage. She dotes on her talented daughter June, pushing her into the spotlight, while her quieter daughter Louise often remains in the shadows. When June escapes her mother’s control, however, Rose shifts her focus to Louise, who reluctantly takes center stage. As vaudeville fades, the family is forced into the world of burlesque. There, the once shy Louise transforms into Gypsy Rose Lee, blossoming into a confident and glamorous star, and eventually breaking free from her mother’s control.
Meanwhile, Rose struggles with her own fading role and unfulfilled dreams. In the climactic moment, she confronts her ambitions and heartbreak in the show-stopping solo “Rose’s Turn.”
Gypsy at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway
Majestic Theatre, a landmark of classic Broadway
“Gypsy” is now playing at the Majestic Theatre, one of New York’s most iconic venues. Built in 1927 on 44th Street in the heart of the theater district, the Majestic is renowned for its elegant Adam style architecture, a neoclassical design popular in 18th-century England. Most famously, the theater hosted The Phantom of the Opera for a record-breaking 35 years. After the curtain closed on Phantom, the interior was painstakingly restored to its pre-Phantom design. Even the chandelier, long stored away backstage, was returned to its original spot. A fun detail for those who know the Phantom staging.
Address: 245 W 44th St, New York, NY 10036
A glamorous interior that shines again
The first thing I noticed inside was the glowing chandelier above the auditorium. Hidden away during Phantom’s long run, this historic chandelier is finally shining again after 35 years in storage. Its sparkling light reflected beautifully across the theater, absolutely breathtaking.
Souvenirs and exclusive merchandise inside the theater
At each seat, an original Gypsy eco-bag was waiting, which was a special opening-night gift. It felt like the Broadway version of a sports giveaway, and as someone who loves limited-edition items, I couldn’t have been happier.Imagining the staff placing these bags one by one before curtain time filled me with gratitude even before the show began.
The lobby was lined with merchandise stands selling fans, tote bags, scarves, and magnets. The burlesque theme even inspired large decorative fans. Magnets, typically around $10, are a popular choice for theatergoers who like to take home a small keepsake.
My seat for Gypsy
Rear mezzanine view, looking down from above
This time my seat was in the rear mezzanine, right center, row F. On the seating chart it looked quite far back, so I was nervous about the view. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised for it was much better than I expected. Thanks to the steep incline of the mezzanine, nothing blocked the sightlines, and I could take in the stage’s full energy and emotion. Of course, the performers looked smaller compared to the orchestra or front mezzanine seats, but even from the back the intensity was powerful, a testament to the cast’s incredible talent.
Review of the Broadway musical Gypsy
Here are my impressions as I left the theater, grinning from ear to ear.
1. Surprisingly buoyant and easy to enjoy
I went into Gypsy without researching too much, expecting something heavy given its themes: a domineering stage mother, family struggles, and a premiere back in 1959. Normally, I’d imagine such a show to be message-heavy and serious. But Gypsy turned out to be delightfully different. While there are poignant, emotional moments, I found myself laughing out loud far more often. Rose’s over-the-top behavior was hilariously relatable, and the vaudeville troupe and burlesque performers added plenty of comic relief. Despite its serious themes, the show radiated brightness and fun.
It reminded me that many musicals from Broadway’s golden age in the 1950s had this same buoyant energy, from The Music Man to My Fair Lady. Revivals like this allow us to rediscover the vibrancy of that era.
2. Audra McDonald’s powerhouse performance
Audra McDonald’s portrayal of Rose was astonishing. The role is notoriously demanding: volatile, layered, and vocally challenging, all of which she carried it with breathtaking power. I could feel my heart pounding from the intensity of her performance. It wasn’t just her extraordinary voice but the depth behind it. Her ability to channel Rose’s passion, contradictions, and loneliness straight into the audience’s hearts. That’s what set her apart. When she appeared on stage, the theater erupted with cheers and a standing ovation. She soaked in the applause with perfect timing before diving back into character, which I’d call a true Broadway star moment. If you want to experience the very best of Broadway, this is it.
3. The thrill of opening night
There’s nothing quite like an opening night. The show had its small accidents like unexpected pauses and stops that often come with a first performance, but the energy was electric nonetheless. The cheers, the applause, the shared excitement in the room: it felt less like watching a play and more like witnessing a live sporting event, with the entire audience experiencing something brand new together.Next to me sat longtime fans who clearly adored Gypsy. They giggled, whispered with delight, and even sang along under their breath. Their joy was contagious. And judging by the reactions around me, the house was full of die-hard Gypsy enthusiasts who had been waiting years for this revival.
The photo above shows the stage door after the show. It was packed, and while Audra McDonald didn’t appear, the excitement was overwhelming. One ensemble member celebrated his Broadway debut and fans shouted congratulations. The atmosphere was moving and unforgettable. If you see the show, staying after for the stage door is absolutely worth it.
