Honest Review of Wicked on Broadway - Is It Worth Seeing?

Hi, this is Mari. We went to see the classic Broadway musical Wicked, a long-running fan favorite.
This report covers the plot of Wicked, highlights, recommended seating, and honest review of our local staff!

About Wicked

Wicked has been performed at the Gershwin Theatre since 2003 and remains one of the most popular, consistently sold-out musicals on Broadway. The story is about another story before The Wizard of Oz, it explores the untold friendship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South.

The show was produced by major Hollywood studio Universal Pictures, which invested a staggering $14 million USD. With its grand stage sets, elaborate props, costumes, lighting, and sound design, the production captivates from start to finish. Above the audience hangs an imposing dragon, part of a scenic design by Eugene Lee that earned the 2004 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design.

Remember the Story of “The Wizard of Oz” Before Watching WICKED on the stage

The Theatre Version: “The Wizard of Oz
“The Wizard of Oz” is a children’s novel written by L. Frank Baum in 1900. More than a century later, it continues to be loved around the world. The story follows a young girl named Dorothy who lives on a farm in Kansas. One day, a tornado lifts her house and transports her with her dog Toto the magical Land of Oz.

As Dorothy journeys to find a way back home, she meets a Scarecrow who desires a brain, a Tin Man who longs for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion in search of courage. They travel and form a strong bond each other.

Wicked offers new insights, such as how the Scarecrow and Tin Man became who they are—making the story even more compelling.

Our seats for Wicked was here

Ticket info: ORCHO L 113 – What it means

Our seat for Wicked was ORCHO L 113, which translates to:
Orchestra Odd = First Floor Orchestra Section
Row L(15th row from the front) Seat 113

Seats in the 100s are considered central orchestra. The higher the seat number, the closer to the aisle; the lower the number, the more centered you are.

While aisle seats offer easy access to restrooms, seats closer to the middle provide a more immersive experience during the show.

Eye-Catching Details: The Dragon and the Map of Oz
One of Wicked’s biggest attractions is its dynamic stage, full of surprises for both children and adults. Performers appear from above and below, and transitions between locations like the Emerald City happen in the blink of an eye. The set changes are so smooth and seamless, you’re instantly drawn into the story.

To fully appreciate the immersive world of Wicked, we recommend sitting in the front orchestra section, not too close but directly facing the stage, where you can see the full picture.

Note: If you sit too far back, like in the balcony or 3rd floor, you might miss subtle comedic interactions during school scenes or character details that are best viewed up close.

Pay special attention to the lighting design – especially the dazzling emerald green LEDs. Personally, I loved the detailed gorgeous costumes, each tailored to reflect the personality of the character wearing them.

Check out the official Wicked merchandise during intermission

Official Merch Tables on the Second Floor
During intermission, head up to the second floor of the Gershwin Theatre where you can buy Wicked merchandises. You’ll find T-shirts, mugs, broomstick-themed souvenirs, and even umbrellas—all featuring iconic Wicked motifs.

You’ll also find two neon-lit green bars where you can grab a drink. A beer may cost about $18 (roughly 2,000 yen), but it comes in a souvenir cup featuring Wicked’s logo—a nice bonus to take home.

Final honest thoughts/reviews on Wicked

A heartful story of friendship – full of laughs and tears

We were greeted warmly at the entrance by a cheerful staff who helped us find our seats easily. I was relieved to see that the seating was tiered enough so the heads in front didn’t block my view at all.

As the curtain rose, the scene changes quickly and spectacular lighting immediately pulled us into Wicked’s world. The performance was packed with surprising set transitions and stunning visuals that made me not want to blink.

The evolving friendship between the two contrasting lead characters was deeply relatable. It wasn’t just a simple story of friendship. It also touched on heavier themes like discrimination and what defines good and evil. It left a lasting impression, even for adult viewers.

Glinda, the “good witch,” was delightfully over-the-top and had the audience laughing with her charm and humor. Her comedic timing created a wonderful sense of unity in the theatre.

The choreography was also remarkable. Rather than everyone dancing in unison, each cast member had unique movements that came together cohesively—there was never a dull moment.

The costumes were vibrant and full of character, each uniquely crafted to reflect the role. I especially loved the student uniforms from the school scenes and the eccentric green outfits paired with black sunglasses in the Emerald City scenes. (If you’re interested in the designs, be sure to experience them during the performance!)

Unforgettable top songs from Wicked

Curtain call is the only moment photography is allowed—don’t miss your shot!
The songs featured in Wicked were composed by Stephen Schwartz, and include unforgettable hits like “Defying Gravity,” “The Wizard and I,” “Popular,” and “For Good.” Once you hear them, they’re impossible to forget.

My personal favorite is “Popular”—I often catch myself singing “Po-pu-u-lar!” to its catchy melody. The tune is so infectious, it sticks in your head for days.

The original cast recording of Wicked, packed with these iconic numbers, won the Grammy Award for Best musical Show Album, and went on to achieve the rare feat of platinum sales which was a remarkable achievement for a Broadway album.

The Anthem of Wicked: “Defying Gravity”

Among all the songs in Wicked, “Defying Gravity” stands out as the show’s most iconic anthem.

This powerful number was originally performed by Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba in the original Broadway production. She later became world-famous for singing “Let It Go” in Disney’s movie “Frozen”. Her performance in Wicked earned her the 58th Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

Here’s the empowering lyrics that resonate with so many fans:

Defying Gravity – Lyrics

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep

It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It’s time to try defying gravity
I think I’ll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I am defying gravity
And you won’t bring me down!
