After running for over 15 years since its premiere in 2003, the beloved puppet musical “Avenue Q” is coming to an end. The show won three Tony Awards in 2004 — Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score — before briefly closing on Broadway and returning in 2009 as an Off-Broadway production due to popular demand. Known for introducing a fresh, irreverent puppet-based format to the stage, Avenue Q will close on April 28, 2019. Don’t miss this final chance to see the show that redefined adult musical comedy.
Avenue Q final performance: April 28, 2019
Over 15 years of laughter and heart
After a successful trial run in Connecticut in March 2003, Avenue Q premiered at the Vineyard Theatre Off-Broadway, quickly gaining momentum. Just four months later, it transferred to Broadway, where it won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the following year. The show ran for more than 2,500 performances before closing its Broadway chapter in September 2009. Only one month later, it reopened at New World Stages as an Off-Broadway production and continued to delight audiences for another decade.
Although the show alternated between Broadway and Off-Broadway, it rarely went dark, maintaining an impressive 15-year run that makes it one of New York’s longest-running modern musicals.
Avenue Q at New World Stages
Located at 8th Avenue and 50th Street, New World Stages houses five theaters under one roof. In addition to Avenue Q, the venue also features other long-running Off-Broadway hits such as The Gazillion Bubble Show (since 2007) and Jersey Boys (since 2017). This multi-theater complex has become a central hub for New York’s Off-Broadway entertainment scene.
