The record-breaking Broadway musical Hamilton, which earned 16 Tony Award nominations and won 11 including Best Musical in 2016, is coming to the big screen under Disney. The film features the original Broadway cast, capturing live performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre along with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. The original theatrical release was set for October 15, 2021.
Disney adapts the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” for film
Unlike live-action remakes such as Aladdin or Cats, Disney’s Hamilton is a cinematic recording of three live performances featuring the original Broadway cast at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The film includes onstage moments as well as rare behind-the-scenes footage. It was originally scheduled for theatrical release on October 15, 2021.
Directed by Broadway’s own Thomas Kail
The film is directed by Thomas Kail, who also directed the original Broadway production, while Lin-Manuel Miranda—the creator, composer, lyricist, and star of Hamilton—reprises his role on screen.
Miranda commented, “Thomas will capture the heart of what we built on stage. It’s an honor to share Hamilton with people all around the world through this film.”
Before Hamilton, Kail and Miranda collaborated on the 2008 Tony-winning musical In the Heights, which received 12 nominations and won four awards including Best Musical. The global hit Hamilton made its film debut on Disney’s streaming service Disney+ on July 3, 2020 (Japan time).
Originally slated for theaters in October 2021, the release was moved up and distributed online due to Broadway’s extended shutdown caused by COVID-19. This gave fans around the world a rare opportunity to experience the energy of Broadway from home.
During a time defined by “stay home” and social distancing, Disney+ brings the power of Broadway directly to audiences everywhere.

Original Broadway cast and legacy
Hamilton’s original Broadway cast became a cultural phenomenon. The cast recording, released on September 21, 2015, won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200, topping the Rap Albums chart. The show attracted global superstars such as Jennifer Lopez, Emma Watson, Kanye West, Jay-Z & Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, James Corden, Natalie Portman, and Katy Perry. At its peak, tickets were sold out up to ten months in advance and resold for over $3,000 on secondary markets.In recognition of their impact, the cast performed Hamilton songs for President Barack Obama at the White House in 2016.
