Hamilton – Story
The Plot / Summary of Hamilton
Act One
The musical opens with “Alexander Hamilton,” introducing his origins as an orphan born out of wedlock and setting up the key figures who will shape his life. The number is led by Aaron Burr, once Hamilton’s role model but ultimately his rival, who later fatally shoots him in a duel.Hamilton and Burr meet in the summer of 1776. Burr advises the fast-talking Hamilton to smile more and speak less, but Hamilton refuses. He bonds with three fellow revolutionaries who dream of fighting for a greater cause. Meanwhile, the Schuyler sisters are swept up in the revolutionary fervor of New York. In 1780, Hamilton meets Eliza Schuyler, quickly falls in love, and marries her. Eliza’s sister Angelica harbors feelings for Hamilton but steps aside for the sake of her sister.
Hamilton and Burr join the Continental Army. George Washington takes Hamilton on as his aide-de-camp, though he promotes Charles Lee instead of Hamilton to a command. When Lee disobeys orders and retreats at the Battle of Monmouth, Washington is criticized. Hamilton’s allies challenge Lee to a duel and defeat him, but an angered Washington sends Hamilton home. There, Hamilton learns that Eliza is pregnant. Their son Philip is born after the war.
As the war nears its end, Washington finally gives Hamilton the command he has long sought. Hamilton leads troops at the Battle of Yorktown, securing victory and America’s independence.
After the Revolution, Hamilton and Burr return to New York to study law. Hamilton co-authors The Federalist Papers to push for support for ratification of the Constitution, and Washington appoints him the first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton works relentlessly to shape the young nation.
Act Two
In 1789, Thomas Jefferson returns from France and is named the first Secretary of State. He and Hamilton clash repeatedly over national debt and whether the United States should support the French Revolution.Eliza and Angelica urge Hamilton to slow down, but he refuses and remains focused on his work. During their absence, Maria Reynolds approaches Hamilton, claiming she is being abused by her husband. Hamilton begins an affair with her, leading to blackmail and a scandal he cannot escape.
Over dinner, Hamilton, Jefferson, and James Madison strike the Compromise of 1790: Madison and Jefferson support Hamilton’s financial plan in exchange for moving the nation’s capital from New York to Washington, D.C. Burr is excluded from the deal, fueling his resentment and ambition. He switches political parties and defeats Eliza’s father for a Senate seat, deepening his rivalry with Hamilton.
Washington confides in Hamilton that Jefferson has resigned to pursue the presidency and that he himself plans to step down. King George III celebrates, predicting the young nation will fail without Washington’s leadership.
Jefferson, Madison, and Burr uncover Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds in an effort to destroy him. To protect his political legacy, Hamilton publicly admits the scandal, effectively ending his political career. Devastated, Eliza burns their correspondence.
Years later, Philip defends his father’s honor in a duel but is killed. The tragedy reunites Hamilton and Eliza, and Hamilton seeks her forgiveness.
During the election of 1800, Burr asks Hamilton’s support. Distrusting Burr’s opportunism, Hamilton throws his backing to Jefferson instead. Enraged, Burr challenges Hamilton to a duel in New Jersey, where Hamilton is killed.
In the finale, characters reflect on Hamilton’s legacy. Eliza reveals she devoted the rest of her life to preserving his memory, including founding New York’s first private orphanage and running it for 50 years.

The highlight of this musical is that it is definitely rap! It's a musical that has a feel unlike any other musical you've seen before. While you might think that the story would feature a white cast, it features people of various races, which I think is another highlight of this production.
I've never seen a musical like this! What makes it different from regular musicals is that all the dialogue (songs) are rap.
The story is about the time when America won its independence and was in the process of drafting its Constitution, so the content is by no means sweet, but it's precisely because the content is so "serious" that expressing it through rap strangely suits it and makes it so funny!
The cheers when the first curtain rose were incredible, and I had a really fun and wonderful time.
Honestly, the English was difficult!! I went with 100% or more expectations, but the rap was so difficult that I couldn't understand a word of it... The atmosphere on stage, the songs, the cast's singing, and the dancing were all outstanding.
I thought it was worth it just to be able to experience a Tony Award-winning production live.
I'd like to try it again if ticket prices came down a bit!
I had a great time! It was great.
Next time, I'll come back with my mother.
I'll buy tickets from At Broadway again. Thank you.
I hope everyone in the office is doing well!
I was really looking forward to seeing Hamilton!! I wanted to see it when I came to NY four years ago, but the tickets were too expensive and sold out.
I wonder if the price has dropped a little since the cast changed. It's easy to see why it swept the Tony Awards. If tickets were easier to get, I think more Japanese people would come to see it. This is the best play I've seen recently!!

Behind the Scenes of Hamilton
The Origins of Hamilton
The idea for the musical Hamilton began when Lin-Manuel Miranda, already known for writing and starring in his Tony Award-winning show In the Heights (2008), picked up Ron Chernow’s best-selling 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton while on vacation. Inspired by Hamilton’s rise from a poor orphan in the Caribbean to George Washington’s right-hand man and trusted aide, a Founding Father, and the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Miranda saw reflections and parallels with his own father’s immigrant journey from Puerto Rico to New York City, where he later served as an advisor to Mayor Ed Koch.
Because America is a nation of immigrants, Miranda envisioned a cast that would reflect that diversity. Nearly all of the principal roles are performed by actors of color, setting Hamilton apart from earlier Broadway musical productions.
Even after Miranda and several original cast members left the show in July 2016, Hamilton continued its record-breaking run. Miranda’s final performance drew such demand that tickets reportedly sold for as much as $20,000.
Revolutionary Use of Hip-Hop and R&B
What makes Hamilton a Broadway phenomenon is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking score, which blends hip-hop, R&B, and rap in a way never before heard on a Broadway stage. His fast-paced, razor-sharp lyrics give the story of America’s founding fathers a modern rhythm and sense of urgency.
Miranda is also known for creating In the Heights and composing music for Disney’s Moana, but Hamilton remains his most iconic work. The rap-driven storytelling captures the ambition and intensity of a revolution, showing how young visionaries fought to build a nation.
If you’re not sure where to begin, we recommend “One Last Time,” a stirring duet between George Washington and Hamilton, or “Satisfied,” where Angelica Schuyler’s rapid-fire delivery showcases both lyrical skill and emotional depth.
Songs and Music from Hamilton
Because the songs in Hamilton rely heavily on rap and fast-paced storytelling, the lyrics can be challenging to follow, even for advanced English speakers. To fully enjoy the experience, we recommend reviewing the storyline in advance.
