The globally beloved series “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” written by British author J. K. Rowling, won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Play in the same year it made its Broadway debut. It has now been announced that the production will also be staged at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco beginning in fall 2019.
A remarkable achievement only two years after its world premiere
This production continues the story from the 2011 film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” and is set primarily at the magical school attended by Harry Potter’s son. Created as a straight play rather than a musical, it premiered at the Palace Theatre in London in July 2016, the birthplace of author J. K. Rowling. The script was simultaneously published as the series’ eighth book and released on July 31 2016, Rowling’s birthday. It became the most pre ordered book of 2016.
The stage production generated tremendous acclaim. At the Laurence Olivier Awards, considered the most prestigious theater awards in the United Kingdom and often compared to the Tony Awards, it won nine awards including Best Actor, the most in the award’s history. About a year and a half after its London premiere, the show opened on Broadway where it won six Tony Awards in 2018 including Best Play.
International expansion of Harry Potter on stage
Although specific premiere dates and casting details for the newly announced San Francisco production have not yet been released, the play continues to expand internationally. Performances began in Melbourne Australia in January 2019, and a German production is scheduled to open in Hamburg in spring 2020.
