The Plot / Summary of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Poster of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child broadway
Set in London 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the story begins as Harry Potter lives a quieter life as a celebrated hero, with his wife Ginny and their three children.

Among them, his middle child, Albus Severus Potter, named in honor of Professor Severus Snape and bearing a striking resemblance to his father, struggles under the weight of expectations that come with being the son of the wizarding world’s most famous figure.

When Albus arrives at Hogwarts, he begins to uncover unsettling truths about his father’s past. The story takes a dramatic turn when Amos Diggory, the aging father of Cedric who was killed during the Triwizard Tournament, pleads with Harry at the Ministry of Magic to use a forbidden Time-Turner to change history.

Driven by doubt and a desire to define himself, Albus secretly steals the Time-Turner. Together with Scorpius Malfoy, Draco’s son, and Delphi, Amos’s niece, he travels back in time, setting in motion dangerous consequences that disrupt the fabric of reality.

As timelines fracture and collide, a powerful conflict unfolds between father and son across shifting worlds and altered histories. How far can magic and time be pushed before everything they know is lost?

The Magical World in New York!!

Although this is a play, not a musical, we got to see a lot of amazing and daring choreography!

And above all, I was impressed by the incredible onstage recreation of magic using fire and light 😉

You can tell that a lot of money was spent on this production. The story takes place after Harry Potter becomes a father, so you can enjoy it even if you haven't seen the movies or read the books!

The theater also had a different atmosphere from other Broadway theaters, and I was happy to be able to take some cute photos in the British phone booth that was set up there.

NY ver. was epic

I saw this production in Japan, and the New York version had a great cast, flashy direction, and many surprises. Even though I don't understand English, the world of Harry Potter is pleasant to listen to. As a Harry Potter fan, I'm glad I saw it. Thank you for the tickets.

Interesting

I'm not a Harry Potter fan, so I was a little worried about whether I'd enjoy it, but I had no problems and enjoyed the show. It was such a magical time that I felt like I'd actually been transported to a magical world!

It was my first time in New York with my grandfather, so I was a little worried, but thanks to Atto New York, we were able to enjoy our trip to New York without any problems.

New Potter World

Harry Potter is a play, not a musical, so there wasn't as much dancing as in other musicals. It was almost entirely acting and dialogue. The atmosphere of author J.K. Rowling was very present and it was very interesting. I was able to experience a new world of Harry Potter.

Truly Broadway

The atmosphere of the theater was great, and the direction and costumes were typical of Broadway, but the two-part structure might be a challenge for tourists! Tickets are expensive! And since it's not a musical, being immersed in English for such a long performance could have been a bit of a headache.

Behind the Scenes of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Flower button icon Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway triviaIt feels less like a play and more like watching a live-action film

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway behind-the-scenes The play begins where the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, ends. You may wonder why the continuation of the beloved Harry Potter series was created for the stage in New York rather than on the screen, but the reason becomes clear once the performance begins.

Nothing feels limited by the stage. The world of Harry Potter is carefully recreated live, with spells, movement, and effects unfolding in real time. Characters are blasted backward, time appears to reverse, and the stage is filled with constant action, creating the feeling of watching a film come to life.

Flower button icon Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway triviaA production quality unmatched on Broadway

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway highlights Adapting well-known novels or films for the stage can be challenging, but this show brings the Harry Potter universe to life entirely through live theater. With cutting-edge lighting, perspective-based sets, and projection mapping combined seamlessly with top-tier performances, the result is nothing short of astonishing.

Broadway’s Lyric Theatre underwent a major renovation at a cost of $35 million, with hidden stage mechanisms built throughout the venue. Industry insiders have compared the scale of this production to Wicked, making it a must-see not only for the story, but also for the technical secrets embedded within the theater itself.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway trivia Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London’s West End in 2016, earning major awards, including the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. Performances sold out regularly, establishing the play as a major success.

The play later became a Broadway sensation in New York and has since expanded worldwide, with productions in cities including Melbourne, San Francisco, Hamburg, Toronto, and Tokyo.

When Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione in the Harry Potter films, attended the play and embraced stage actress Noma Dumezweni, she praised the production, saying, “There were moments that felt even more beautiful than the films – this play is the greatest gift to me.” Her words inspired even more fans to experience the show.

Flower button icon Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway triviaHermione reimagined with diverse casting

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway highlights The Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child drew attention for casting a Black actress as Hermione Granger. In response to public discussion, author J.K. Rowling stated that the books never specified Hermione’s race, challenging expectations and drawing reactions from fans and media alike.

This approach to casting reflects the diversity of modern theater and is one reason many audiences find live Broadway performances unique and meaningful.

If English is challenging, this guide will help you enjoy the play!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, not a musical. There are no songs, and the entire performance is delivered through spoken English.
For visitors who are less confident in English or who are not fully familiar with the story, it may help to review key plot points in advance. Doing so can make the experience easier to follow and more enjoyable.

If you do not mind a few spoilers and would like to make the most of your experience, click below to read our “Tips for Enjoying the Show.”

Read with spoilers: Tips for enjoying Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Tip 1: Rewatch “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”

Cedric Diggory, who was killed by Voldemort, becomes a key part of this story. If you’re wondering, “Who was Cedric again?”, this is the film to revisit. He was a talented student and a mentor figure to Harry. The fourth film shows when and how Cedric died during the Triwizard Tournament, and what Harry was doing at that moment. In the play, Cedric’s father, Amos, still struggles to accept his son’s death, and that grief drives the story.

Tip 2: Understand the meaning behind the name Albus Severus Potter

Albus’s middle name, “Severus,” comes from Professor Severus Snape, who is often mistaken for a villain. As revealed in the final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” Snape was once a Death Eater but secretly loved Harry’s mother, Lily. When Voldemort targeted the Potters after a prophecy, Snape begged Dumbledore to protect Lily. Though Harry’s parents were killed, Snape swore to watch over Harry, who shared Lily’s eyes, and ultimately served as a double agent between Voldemort and Dumbledore while teaching at Hogwarts.

Tip 3: Know the importance of Harry’s blanket

Harry kept the blanket left by his parents as his most treasured memento. Every year on October 31, the anniversary of their deaths, he held it close to remember them.
In an effort to mend his strained relationship with his son, Harry gives the blanket to Albus as a gift when he begins a new school year. However, Albus accidentally spills a Love Potion on it, burning the fabric. This causes further conflict between them, but the blanket itself becomes a vital key to the play’s storyline. Remember that the Love Potion reacts with the material and leaves a permanent mark.

Tip 4: Who is the Cursed Child?

Early on, the story hints that Draco Malfoy was believed to be unable to have children. Yet his son, Scorpius, exists, leading to cruel rumors that he might actually be Voldemort’s child – the true “Cursed Child.” In truth, Scorpius was born from the deep love between Draco and his wife, Astoria, who later passed away from illness. So the question remains: who is the real Cursed Child? Unraveling that mystery becomes one of the play’s most important threads.

Tip 5: Read parts of the story in your own language

If you want a clearer idea of the plot, you can read the full synopsis on Wikipedia before attending. This does spoil the story, but it doesn’t diminish the quality of the play. Even when you know the twists, the live staging, special effects, and magic tricks are breathtaking. We recommend reading the synopsis in advance if you want to feel more comfortable following along during the performance.
