The long-awaited Broadway debut of the musical Moulin Rouge! finally began previews on June 28, 2019. Fans who had been eagerly anticipating its arrival can now step into this dazzling world of love and music. The original film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor was a worldwide hit, and following the musical’s successful run in Boston, expectations for its Broadway production are sky-high.
All eyes on the award-winning cast
The show stars Aaron Tveit, acclaimed for his role in the film adaptation of Les Misérables, and Karen Olivo, a Tony Award-winning actress. Their chemistry and vocal performances have been generating major buzz. As we mentioned in our previous feature, Aaron’s smooth and powerful vocals perfectly match his charming presence on stage.The cast also includes Tony-nominated Danny Burstein, Sahr Ngaujah, Tam Mutu, Ricky Rojas, and Robyn Hurder—a lineup that ensures a powerhouse performance from start to finish.
Now playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre
Moulin Rouge is performed at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, which was previously home to Kinky Boots for six years starting in 2013. Known for its Byzantine-inspired interior that feels more like an art museum than a theater, the venue has undergone an extensive renovation for this production, creating a lavish new space worthy of Paris’s most famous cabaret.
Directed by Alex Timbers, creator of “Beetlejuice”
The Broadway version follows the successful Boston production under the direction of Alex Timbers, who also directed the Tony-nominated musical Beetlejuice. Known for blending fantasy and emotion, Timbers brings his signature visual storytelling to the stage, transforming Moulin Rouge into a stunning dreamlike spectacle that feels larger than life.
Script by the writer of “Gladiator” and “The Last Samurai”
The script was written by John Logan, best known for his work on Gladiator and The Last Samurai. One of the highlights of the Boston run was its music—an exciting blend of familiar classics and modern hits. In addition to songs from the original movie, the Broadway version adds tracks by Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Adele, and Katy Perry, creating a show that appeals to audiences of all generations.
