About Moulin Rouge! The Musical
More than a simple screen to stage adaptation
Inspired by the smash 2001 film, the show opened on stage in 2019 with a bold, lavish production.
We watched from two angles: one of us knows the movie by heart, one had never seen it, and both left in tears. You can fully enjoy the musical even if you haven’t seen the film. The stage version keeps the best parts while streamlining the story so the emotions land clearly. Add the electricity of live performance and the impact is powerful and beautiful.
Story summary for the stage version
The year is 1900 in Paris.
Christian, a young songwriter from America, meets the exuberant choreographer Santiago and the limping director Toulouse. Impressed by Christian’s singing, they recruit him and suggest pitching their project to the cabaret Moulin Rouge.
Meanwhile, the Moulin Rouge, managed by Harold, is struggling to stay open. Harold plans to ask the star dancer Satine to charm the wealthy Duke into becoming a sponsor. On the night the Duke visits, Christian also arrives and falls for Satine at first sight as she performs.
After her song, Satine waits in her dressing room to meet the Duke, but Christian enters first. Mistaking him for the Duke, she flirts, they share a heated kiss, and chaos follows when the truth comes out. Harold brings in the real Duke, and Satine covers by saying they were “discussing a new show.” Their friends rally and pitch an improvised concept, which the Duke agrees to fund.
The deal comes with a cruel condition that Satine must belong to the Duke. Even so, Christian pursues Satine and the two fall in love. When the Duke learns of their affair, he gets furious. Torn between protecting the Moulin Rouge and loving Christian, Satine pushes him away. Opening night arrives as both reach their limit; Christian makes a desperate choice, and Satine’s illness moves toward an unavoidable end.

The cast we saw

Christian: Aaron Tveit
Known on screen as Enjolras in the film of Les Misérables, Aaron Tveit is a proven Broadway leading man with credits including Rent and Wicked. He is effortlessly charismatic, and that rich, tender voice captivates the house.

Satine: Ashley Loren
Our performance featured Ashley Loren as the alternate Satine.Having seen both portrayals, we felt the original Satine radiates a warm glow, while Ashley’s Satine is a cool, magnetic star. Both are outstanding.
The venue for Moulin Rouge! The Musical
Al Hirschfeld Theatre
This beautifully named venue honors caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, whose theatre drawings appeared for decades in The New York Times. On the second level you can view his works displayed like an atelier.
The interior feels like a museum in the best way, and it is a pleasure just to stroll through the lobby.
Address: 302 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036
For seating charts and venue tips, see our detailed theater page.
Pick up exclusive Moulin Rouge merchandise at the theater
The official merch counters are on both the main and second levels. On the main level, the stand is on the left just after you enter; on the second level, it is immediately left of the bar at the top of the stairs.
Many numbers are clever remixes that blend multiple hits. Even if you’re not a pop expert, it is a thrill to hear familiar tunes transformed for the plot. After the show you may find yourself looking up the soundtrack and rediscovering the originals.
An amped up set that turns the theater into a cabaret
Among Broadway sets, Moulin Rouge is a head turner. It drew buzz at its Boston tryout for pure opulence, and for Broadway the production invested about 25 million dollars, far beyond a typical renovation, to build a world that feels like a French cabaret come to life.
Everyone notices the giant heart framing the stage, but look closer and you’ll see how the drapery, chandeliers, and every detail are meticulously unified to the Moulin Rouge aesthetic.
On the left is the red windmill, echoing the real cabaret’s rooftop in Paris. “Moulin Rouge” literally means “red windmill.” Stylish to the last detail.
Photo rules before the show
If you still want photos, good news: you may take them at intermission and after the performance. Note that the iconic heart set is not onstage during intermission.
The photos in this review were taken after most guests had left, which makes it easier to capture the stage.

Our seats for this visit
How to read the ticket: ORCHC O 114
Row O (12th from the front), seat 114
The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is compact front to back, and performers often come down the runway, so from row O we could easily see facial expressions. Even Satine’s descent from above was fully visible. It was a comfortable view.
February only Playbill special Valentine edition
Look closely and you’ll see motifs from the show, the elephant from Satine’s room, dancers of the Moulin Rouge, and the four themes “Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love.” The heart-filled cover lifted our spirits even before the overture.
Satine was a goddess even at the stage door
The moment the curtain call ended, our staffer Fujiki headed to the stage door hoping to meet the leads. We arrived quickly, but an usher said, “He’s gone.” Aaron Tveit had already left. Alas.
People sometimes say that without the stage lights, stars look ordinary, but not here. Ashley was luminous even on the sidewalk, signing for each fan with poise and a profile that defined “stunning.”
Why the characters make Moulin Rouge so rich
Over beers near Times Square, our team realized that while the plot is straightforward, the characters’ backstories give the show its emotional punch. Even the supporting roles deserve attention, so here are the ones that stood out.

The charming ringmaster: Harold Zidler
The jovial manager of the Moulin Rouge is a delightful showman. Beneath the sparkle, he shares Satine’s tough beginnings, having built the cabaret from nothing. Both carry a mission to protect the Moulin Rouge at any cost.Yes, Harold is the one who brokers Satine to the Duke, yet she accepts the burden without complaint. When he learns of Satine’s failing health, he worries more than anyone. Their shared history forms a quiet spine of the story.

The consummate cynic: the Duke
When Satine makes her entrance, Christian leans forward with youthful excitement while the Duke lounges with wine in hand. He will spend, cut ties, and play petty games to get what he wants. He lives in the adult world without romance, which clashes with Christian’s idealism.
The apostle of passion: Santiago
Moulin Rouge is not just glitter, it runs hot. Santiago carries much of that heat. His fiery duet with Nini, who wears the boldest costumes, is jaw dropping.Set to Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” the mood onstage flips from glam to feverish intensity, echoing the electricity of West Side Story.

The hidden protagonist: Toulouse
Often mistaken for a side character, Toulouse could anchor a parallel story. He has long harbored a quiet love for Satine, and his role as her constant guardian becomes pivotal. In one scene, he and Satine sit together as “old friends,” speaking softly about the young Christian. Their calm voices carry the ache of people who know the rules of the adult world.

Strength that inspires women: Satine
Satine’s strength draws empathy. We heard quiet sobs around the theater during her most intense scenes. Loving Christian softens her hardened heart, if only a little.Yet she believes she must belong to the Duke. She tells her friends “I’ve got this,” then fights back tears as she stays with him. In the end, freed from every burden, she rests in Christian’s arms. it is devastating and tender at once.

The pure romantic: Christian
Unlike the others, Christian is the truly innocent soul. Kneeling to Satine with clear eyes and pleading “Let me love you,” he leads with pure feeling, sometimes recklessly. Theatre magic helps a thirty-something actor read as twenty, and his unfiltered youth shakes the adults around him for better and worse.Final reviews of Moulin Rouge! The Musical
Many songs are global hits reimagined as inventive remixes, and the arrangements gave us chills. Because lyrics track the story closely, the meanings land clearly, and we rediscovered the beauty of the originals. Watching nearby fans laugh at references made us wish we had brushed up on every lyric, but that just meant we were humming the score on the way out and searching for the cast album when we got home.
The motto “Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love” may sound lofty at first, yet after the show each word recalls a person or a scene. It leaves you tender and warm.
We cried at the end, but somehow walked out ready for tomorrow. That is the kind of happiness this night delivered.
