We were invited to the hit Broadway musical The Band’s Visit, a production that received 11 Tony Award nominations in 2018.
Tied with Angels in America for the most nominations that season, expectations were high going in.

The Band’s Visit show overview
The story follows an Egyptian police orchestra that, by a twist of fate, is sent to a remote desert town in Israel. With no shared language and different cultures, locals take the band in for the night, and a quiet, human connection unfolds.
Based on the 2007 Israeli film, the musical explores longing, small-town restlessness, and the ways music lets strangers meet in the middle. Songs and live instruments carry the emotions with a restrained, intimate touch.

Our seats this time
How to read RMEZZ E 24 on your ticket:
Row E (fifth row from the front), seat 24
Seat 24 is on the aisle along the wall in the right front mezzanine section. 100s typically mark center orchestra. Higher numbers trend toward aisles; lower numbers trend toward center.
Aisle seats are convenient for quick exits to restrooms, though you need to stand to let others pass if you’re in a center block.
Best seats for The Band’s Visit
Because onstage musicianship is a key part of the show, the orchestra level is an excellent choice if you want to feel the live playing up close. The Middle Eastern textures in the score deepen the atmosphere from the very first notes.
Check official merch at intermission
Restrooms are on the lower level as well. Note that the show runs about 1 hour 30 minutes with no intermission, so it is best to go before curtain.
Post-show impressions
We attended just after the Tony nominations were announced, and the house was packed. With only ninety minutes to tell its story, the pacing is tight, and it builds a surprising amount of warmth in a short time.
Our seats were in the last row of the front mezzanine, but the stage felt closer than expected and the full picture read clearly. The venue was well air-conditioned even in May, so I was right about bringing a light layer.
Finding connection through music
Most characters speak English with a Middle Eastern accent, which can be tricky at first, but your ear adjusts as you focus. That mirrors the shows theme as Arabs and Jews slowly understand each other, the audience tunes in, too.
One detail that stood out: while many switch to crisper diction when singing, Katrina Lenk, nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, maintained her characters accent in both speech and song. Her total commitment as Dina was striking and, we think, key to the shows awards recognition.
Though the plot spans just a single night, it touches on barriers, kindness, and the ache of distance all expressed through music. The direction, writing, and performances align with quiet precision, and the live instrumental passages are especially magnetic. The percussion sequences are highlights. You feel them in your chest. Highly recommended.
A surprise after the finale
Under conductor Tony Giorgio, they played New York, New York live onstage.
Then they joined forces with the cast for a brief collaboration, a memorable end to the evening.
