Highlights of The Band’s Visit – Must-See Moments
Experience the Award-Winning Film Live on Stage
Based on the 2007 film of the same name, The Band’s Visit tells the story of Egyptians and Israelis who, despite decades of division, connect through language, culture, and music. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Film Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival, gaining international recognition as a powerful call for peace. Now, instead of watching it on screen, audiences can experience this human drama live on Broadway, where every emotion is felt more deeply.
Live Middle Eastern Music Performed by the Cast
One of the most unique elements of the Broadway musical The Band’s Visit is the live performance by the eight-member band at the heart of the story. The haunting yet heartwarming Middle Eastern melodies transport audiences to the desert, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and profound. The climactic ensemble performance is especially moving and a highlight not to be missed.
Winner of 10 Tony Awards Including Best musical
At the 72nd Tony Awards in 2018, The Band’s Visit was nominated in 11 categories and won 10, including the prestigious Best musical. Both leading actors were recognized, with Tony Shalhoub winning Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Tewfiq and Katrina Lenk winning Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Dina. This critical success even surpassed the acclaim of the original film, cementing its place as one of the most celebrated Broadway musicals of its time.

The Band’s Visit – Story
The Plot / Summary of The Band’s Visit
Stranded, the band enters a small cafe owned by Dina. She offers them food and suggests that Tewfiq and his musicians spend the night in her home, in the home of her friend Itzik, and in the room of Papi, who boards above the cafe. At first hesitant, Tewfiq reluctantly agrees after realizing Dina lives alone.
As the night unfolds, Dina and Tewfiq share stories about their lives and a deep love for music. Tewfiq confesses the painful guilt he has carried for years over the loss of his wife and son. In their quiet conversation, two strangers from different cultures find unexpected connection and humanity. By morning, the time comes for the band and Dina to say goodbye, leaving behind a bittersweet memory of one night that changed them both.

Behind the Scenes of The Band’s Visit
From Off-Broadway to Broadway
Before arriving on Broadway, this production was first staged Off-Broadway. It ran as a limited one-month engagement from December 8, 2016 to January 8, 2017 at the 199-seat Atlantic Theater Company. It drew attention as a rare musical set in Israel, unlike anything Broadway had seen before. After strong word of mouth, previews on Broadway began in October 2017, just eight months later.
Awards during its Off-Broadway run
Even in its brief Off-Broadway run, the show collected multiple awards and critical acclaim. At the 2017 Obie Awards, leading actress Katrina Lenk performed the song “Omar Sharif,” mesmerizing audiences with a voice that was powerful, sensual, and delicately nuanced.
| Obie Awards | Won 2 categories, honoring Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions staged in New York City |
|---|---|
| Lucille Lortel Awards | Nominated in 2 categories and won both, celebrating excellence in Off-Broadway theater |
| Outer Critics Circle Awards | Received 5 nominations and won 2, selected by critics from major New York newspapers and magazines, covering both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions |
The message of The Band’s Visit
Although stories from the Middle East may feel distant to some audiences, this musical highlights an era in the early 1990s when Israelis and Arabs were in the midst of a peace process. Instead of focusing on political conflict, the show portrays ordinary people opening their hearts to one another in a deeply human way.
The production illustrates how differences in culture, religion, and language can create misunderstandings, yet love for family, friendship, romance, and the joy of music are universal. The story gently reminds us that these values cross all borders.
By showing characters who respect their own traditions while embracing others, The Band’s Visit suggests that cultural empathy and cooperation are exactly what today’s world needs.

The Band’s Visit – Review
From Wakame:
Hmm
It felt a bit too surreal for me and honestly hard to follow. In the end, I wasn’t really sure what message the musical was trying to convey.

From Saito:
Heartwarming
It was a gentle and touching story. For those who have seen many musicals and want something fresh, this one may be a good choice. If you like shows such as An American in Paris, this might appeal to you. The set design was very simple, so it didn’t feel like the usual Broadway spectacle, but that simplicity suited the piece.

From N~:
Not for beginners
To be honest, I didn’t really understand it. Since it won a Tony Award, I guess there must be something that theater enthusiasts appreciate, but it was a bit challenging for me.

From Miyagawa:
Not really recommended
If you don’t understand English, it may be quite difficult to follow. If you’re looking for a more classic Broadway musical style, I would suggest choosing a different show.
