Hello, this is staff writer Machida. This time I went to see the legendary Broadway musical Company.
First staged in 1970, Company is a Stephen Sondheim classic known for its challenging score. I expected something old fashioned and difficult, but this reimagined revival is a light, witty comedy that feels fresh and easy to relate to today.
Here is my firsthand review of Company.

Musical Company overview
On her thirty fifth birthday, the single woman Bobbie looks at marriage and loneliness through visits with four married couples.
Feeling alone even when surrounded by friends, wanting independence yet wanting a partner. Company shows these everyday contradictions with sharp humor and heart.
A classic reborn
Originally premiered more than fifty years ago, this revival makes bold updates. The lead has shifted from Robert, a man, to Bobbie, a woman. Amy is now Jamie, creating a same sex couple with Paul. These changes reflect life in today’s New York and make the show feel current for modern audiences.
Performed at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre
Company ran at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on West 45th Street, among a cluster of historic Broadway venues. Opened in 1927, this theater sits beside other famous houses, and the area comes alive with theater goers after the curtain falls.
My seat in orchestra right
I sat in Orchestra Right Row N, Seat 6. I could clearly see the actors’ expressions without opera glasses. Many side seats line up directly behind one another, so the view can be partly blocked by the heads in front. For the best sightlines I recommend the center section. On the other hand, there are exciting aisle entrances, which makes the side seats fun too.
Restrooms and merchandise
Restroom lines before the show and during intermission moved quickly thanks to many stalls. There are concession stands on both the main and lower levels. The lower level is usually less crowded and easier to browse. The merchandise has simple New York inspired designs that are both practical and stylish.
Is the English difficult?
The dialogue in Company is close to everyday conversation.Complex words are rare, and the pace is moderate. Many jokes land through movement and facial expression, so the show is friendly even if you aren’t confident in English. Some scenes are all dialogue, so if you are worried, read the synopsis in advance.
Three reasons to love Company
1. Old yet refreshingly new
Bobbie stands between the advice of friends who say marriage makes you complete, being alone is sad, and it is time to settle down. These pressures feel timeless across generations and cultures. For two and a half hours I shared Bobbie’s struggle, and by the end it felt as if a fog had lifted.
The revival also includes the couple Jamie and Paul. They’re presented naturally as one of the four couples. Jamie’s whirlwind patter song “Getting Married Today,” sung in a panic before the wedding, was both hilarious and breathtaking, and it drew the biggest cheers.
2. Powerhouse cast
The legendary Patti LuPone brings commanding presence and razor sharp wit as Joanne. Standout comedic turns and seasoned Broadway voices keep the energy high from start to finish. The mix of star power and proven talent lifts every scene.
3. Playful and striking stage design
The revival is famous for its purple neon artwork with balloons, and the stage recreates this dazzling world as the curtain rises.Bobbie’s visits to each couple play out inside cube like rooms, while her private thoughts unfold in open space, highlighting the gap between public life and inner voice.
A clever early set change surprised the whole audience, and hidden thirty five motifs are scattered throughout.
Honest review on the show
Perfect for travelers who want a real New York musical
True to its description as a musical comedy, Company balances quick New York humor with deeper reflections, not on how one should live but on how one wants to live.
That blend makes it a quintessential New York experience. With unforgettable music by Sondheim and a story that helps each character find what matters most, Company left me encouraged and uplifted.
