Upbeat Music by the Composer of “West Side Story”
The music and lyrics for the original 1970 production were written by the legendary Stephen Sondheim.Known for his work on “West Side Story” and “Into the Woods,” Sondheim is celebrated as one of Broadway’s greatest composers and lyricists. In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and The New York Times described him as “the greatest and best-known artist in American musical theater.”
Sondheim’s full score for “Company” earned the original production a record 14 Tony Award nominations in 1970, winning six including Best musical.
With its catchy rhythms and classic harmonies, the show captures the unmistakable spirit of Broadway and showcases the vocal power of its cast.
A Bold Gender-Swapped Revival
This revival of “Company” introduces a bold twist to the original script: a complete gender swap. In the 1970 production, the central character was Robert (also called Bobby), a bachelor admired by everyone. In this new version, the lead is reimagined as a woman. While keeping the original themes intact, the story is set in modern-day New York and follows a single woman balancing love, career, and friendships. The update also reflects today’s cultural landscape by reimagining one of the couples as a same-sex partnership, bringing a contemporary perspective to a Broadway classic.

I bought tickets straight away because I heard that the lead actress from The Band's Visit will be appearing. I saw the play before The Band's Visit won the Tony Award, and I still remember being blown away by her performance. I like how she doesn't put on a sparkly stage performance, but instead just throws herself into it with her acting. I'm really looking forward to it!
