American Buffalo – Story
The Plot / Summary of American Buffalo
One day, Donny sells an old nickel to a customer for 90 dollars. Soon after, he realizes that the coin is actually a highly valuable Buffalo Nickel. Determined to get it back, he teams up with his young assistant Bobby to plan a way to retrieve it. As part of the scheme, Bobby begins keeping watch on the home of the customer who purchased the rare coin.
At this point, their poker buddy Teach enters the picture. Convinced that Bobby’s plan is far too naive, Teach suggests a bolder idea. Instead of recovering just the single Buffalo Nickel, they should steal the customer’s entire coin collection. Donny then brings in another poker friend, Fletcher, and together the group begins to refine their plan.
When the day of the heist finally arrives, everything seems to be on track. But just as they think they have succeeded, greed and self-interest take over, leading the plot toward unexpected and disastrous consequences.

American Buffalo is a play by David Mamet that premiered in 1975 at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. It was first performed on Broadway in 1977 at the Barrymore Theatre and was nominated for Tony Awards for Best direction of a play and Best Scenic Design. The 1984 revival was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.In 1997, the play was adapted into a film starring Dustin Hoffman. His intense performance, filled with nearly 90 minutes of nonstop dialogue, became a major talking point.
The Special Five Cent Coin: The American Buffalo
The title “American Buffalo” refers to the five cent coin known as the Buffalo Nickel, minted in the United States from 1913 to 1938. Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the coin features the image of a Native American on one side and an American bison on the other, representing strength and heritage.The Buffalo Nickel was produced only at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. Because of its limited production, it is considered a valuable coin among collectors.
