Angels in America – Story
The Plot / Summary of Angels in America
At the center of the story are two gay couples standing at a crossroads. Louis, a Jewish clerk at the Court of Appeals, is in a relationship with Prior (played by Andrew Garfield), a young man diagnosed with AIDS. Terrified by Prior’s worsening condition and overwhelmed by guilt, Louis ultimately abandons him.
Meanwhile, Joe, a Mormon clerk also working at the Court of Appeals, is torn between his troubled, pill-dependent wife Harper (Denise Gough) and his forceful mentor, the powerful attorney Roy Cohn, who tries to push him toward a political career in Washington. Struggling with these pressures, Joe encounters Louis’s despair and gradually comes to terms with his own homosexuality.
Joe’s mother, Hannah (Susan Brown), rushes to New York after learning of her son’s sexuality and unexpectedly becomes connected to Prior, helping care for him. Then, in a moment of mystical revelation, an angel appears before Prior and declares that he has a divine mission. At the same time, Roy Cohn is confronted with his own AIDS diagnosis. As he suffers in pain, he is visited by the ghost of a man he once condemned to death through a corrupt trial…

Behind the Scenes of Angels in America
A Gay Fantasia on National Themes
Angels in America is a groundbreaking play by playwright Tony Kushner, set in New York during the 1980s. It portrays the lives of gay men battling AIDS and the people around them.
The work carries the subtitle “A Gay Fantasia on National Themes”, blending realism and fantasy to address urgent social issues of the 1980s United States, including AIDS, homosexuality, politics, religion, and racism.
The play premiered in 1991 at the Eureka Theatre in San Francisco. In 2003 it was adapted into a television miniseries starring Meryl Streep and others. As a revival, it returned to the stage in spring 2017 at London’s National Theatre and opened on Broadway in February 2018 for a limited engagement.
Powerful Performances from an All-Star Cast
The cast featured Andrew Garfield, known for starring in The Amazing Spider-Man, alongside veteran Broadway actor Nathan Lane, a Tony Award winning star of The Producers and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Garfield’s performance as Prior was delicate and emotionally transparent, with expressive gestures that conveyed his character’s struggle as AIDS weakened his body. He balanced tenderness, despair, and moments of humor in a moving portrayal. Lane’s role as Roy showcased his commanding presence, embodying a man who had always used power and arrogance to get what he wanted.
Roy is based on a real-life New York lawyer and prosecutor who became infamous as a central figure during the Red Scare and later represented high-profile clients including Donald Trump.
Stunning Stagecraft and the Angel’s Arrival
Director Marianne Elliott crafted a powerful atmosphere by darkening the stage and using spotlights on minimal sets to create strikingly different spaces within a single performance. The subtle, conversation-driven acting style highlighted the weight of the words and brought the characters’ inner emotions vividly to life.
One of the most unforgettable elements is the appearance of the Angel. Designed with wild, electrified hair and supported by multiple shadow-like figures, the Angel’s entrance was haunting and memorable.
Elliott’s attention to detail recalls her earlier work in War Horse (2011), where the lifelike puppetry of the horses captivated audiences. In Angels in America, her innovative staging brought the Angel to life in a way that was both surreal and deeply affecting.
