The Plot / Summary of My Name is Asher Lev
Asher’s father, a devout follower of the faith, was a man with no understanding of art. Dedicated to serving the community’s spiritual leader, the Rebbe, he traveled the world spreading Jewish teachings. In contrast, Asher’s mother stood between father and son. While supporting her husband’s devotion, she was haunted by the loss of her brother, who was killed while carrying out similar missionary work. At the same time, she quietly believed in her son’s remarkable artistic gift.
Determined to develop his skills, Asher began visiting museums to study art. Fascinated by crucifixion paintings and the human figure, he started copying what he saw. When his father discovered his drawings, he reacted with anger and disdain, dismissing his son’s passion as foolish. Torn between her husband and her son, Asher’s mother could only grieve at the growing divide.
Eventually, Asher’s father was sent on a mission to Vienna, while Asher remained in Brooklyn with his mother. Free from his father’s oversight, he immersed himself even deeper in painting, abandoning religious studies for his art. Over time, his extraordinary talent gained recognition, and at last he was granted permission by the Rebbe to study under the legendary artist Jacob Kahn.
