The Plot / Summary of Buena Vista Social Club

The Buena Vista Social Club musical tells the true story of legendary Cuban musicians through live music and dance. The show shifts between 1996 and vivid flashbacks to Havana in the 1950s.

In the 1950s, a group of young Cuban musicians created an exciting new sound. But with the Cuban Revolution and the rise of communism, their music was silenced, and the scene they built disappeared overnight.

Forty years later, in 1996, an American guitarist visited Havana and discovered that extraordinary musicians carrying a unique sound unknown to the outside world still lived on the island.

The band needed a female voice to complete its sound, leading them to Omara Portuondo, Cuba’s legendary vocalist. In her youth, Omara performed alongside her sister Haydee as dancers and singers at Havana’s famed Tropicana cabaret (a moment that comes to life on stage in memorable flashback scenes).

Omara fell in love with guitarist Compay Segundo and was drawn into the music of the Buena Vista Social Club. Despite her family’s opposition, she made her debut with the band. Yet under communist rule, the musicians were forced apart. Haydee fled to the United States but died in exile, and Omara, estranged from her family and music, sank into loneliness. Though she resisted at first, one powerful rehearsal with the reunited Buena Vista Social Club reignited her passion. “If I step back on stage, this band will rise again,” she vowed.

With Omara’s return, the group was reborn. Their passion poured into new recordings, and the album became an international sensation. The music and legacy of the Buena Vista Social Club endure forever.

I never thought I'd get to hear the Buena Vista Band in New York. They played some very nostalgic classics. Their amazing performance and acting brought tears to my eyes.
