The Plot / Summary of Bullets Over Broadway

Set in late 1920s Prohibition-era New York, the story follows David, an aspiring playwright who finally gets the chance to bring his work to Broadway. David is thrilled about his big break, but soon learns that his financial backer is mob boss Nick Valenti. In return for his support, Nick insists that his talentless mistress, Olive, be cast in the lead role. She can hardly deliver a line, but David reluctantly agrees, hoping to use Nick’s money to hire top Broadway performers. Rehearsals quickly descend into chaos. Glamorous diva Helen Sinclair seduces David to expand her part. Brilliant but unstable actor Warner Purcell battles overeating, womanizing, and even begins an affair with Olive. Meanwhile, Olive’s grating voice and lack of skill disrupt the production at every turn. To make things worse, her bodyguard — small-time gangster Cheech — starts meddling with the show’s direction. At first, David is furious at Cheech’s blunt criticism of his pretentious script. But he soon realizes that Cheech has a natural instinct for drama and accepts his help revising the play. The rewritten version earns glowing praise, and Helen, sensing David’s rising potential, takes him as her lover, further straining his relationship with his girlfriend Ellen. Everything unravels when Cheech, fed up with Olive’s incompetence, kills her, triggering Nick to send hitmen after him. With affairs exposed, gangsters closing in, and egos in full collision, the curtain finally rises on opening night…
