Fiddler on the Roof – About the Show
Highlights of Fiddler on the Roof – Must-See Moments
Back Off-Broadway in Yiddish for the First Time in Three Years
Since its 1964 premiere, the legendary musical “Fiddler on the Roof” has enjoyed five major Broadway revivals. After the close of its 2016 Broadway run, the show returned three years later in a special Off-Broadway production performed entirely in Yiddish. This unique staging allows audiences to experience the story in the cultural and linguistic context of the Jewish community it portrays. For those planning to attend, it’s recommended to review the story and music beforehand to fully appreciate the performance.
The Thrill of the Traditional Ukrainian “Cossack Dance”
One of the show’s most exciting moments is the tavern scene where Tevye and his companions perform the famous Ukrainian folk dance known as the “Cossack Dance.” Audiences can witness the energy of the Hopak, a traditional dance characterized by fast footwork, acrobatic jumps, and dynamic spins. The pace builds to a breathtaking climax, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. This exhilarating number is a highlight of the production and a rare opportunity to see an authentic dance tradition brought to life on stage in New York City.

Fiddler on the Roof – Story
The Plot / Summary of Fiddler on the Roof
The Jewish villagers are devout and deeply rooted in tradition, following the Torah and the guidance of their rabbis, while maintaining a cautious coexistence with their Russian neighbors. Among them is Tevye, a poor but kindhearted milkman who cherishes a simple life with his wife and five daughters. Wishing only for his daughters’ happiness, Tevye secretly employs a matchmaker, Yente, to find wealthy and stable husbands for them.
One day, Yente proposes a marriage between Tevye’s eldest daughter, Tzeitel, and the wealthy butcher Lazar. Tevye approves of the match, seeing it as secure and promising. However, Tzeitel is already in love with her childhood sweetheart Motel, a poor but passionate tailor. Bound by tradition in which fathers decide marriages, Motel struggles to find the courage to ask for Tevye’s blessing. When he finally does, Tevye, touched by their devotion, reluctantly agrees to let them marry.
Amid growing persecution of Jews, Tevye’s second daughter, Hodel, falls in love with Perchik, a radical student devoted to revolutionary ideals. When Perchik is arrested and exiled to Siberia, Hodel chooses to leave her family behind to follow him, knowing her future lies with him despite the hardship ahead.
Tevye is soon heartbroken again when his third daughter, Chava, falls in love with Fyedka, a young Russian man. Although Fyedka once saved her from harassment, their interfaith romance violates Jewish tradition. Tevye fiercely opposes the match, but Chava defies him and marries Fyedka in a Russian Orthodox church. Devastated, Tevye disowns her, telling his family to consider Chava “dead.”
As tensions rise, the shtetl receives a government order demanding that all Jews leave. Forced to abandon their beloved home, Tevye and his family prepare for an uncertain future, carrying only the memories of their daughters who chose their own paths away from tradition.

Fiddler on the Roof – Review
Yamato Nadeshiko:
Truly world-class
I first saw this show in Japan when Masachika Ichimura played Tevye and became a fan. When I found out about this production, I decided to give it a try even though I don’t speak English or Yiddish. For those unfamiliar with the story it may be challenging, but since I already knew the flow from the Japanese staging, I was able to follow along and really feel the world-class quality of the original production. I hope it comes back to Japan again someday.

Tokyo Resident:
Performed in Yiddish
This is one of those musicals you absolutely have to see at least once. I’ve watched it many times before in Japan, but this was my first time seeing it overseas and in Yiddish, which made it even more exciting. I was really looking forward to this experience and it did not disappoint.

KANEMURA.K:
Incredible dancing
I had seen this show before in Japan, so I already knew the story and chose to experience this unique Yiddish-language production instead of a traditional staging. As mentioned on this page, the performance in Yiddish drew me completely into another world. There are English surtitles, but unless you’re fluent, I strongly recommend reviewing the story in advance. The highlight for me was the dancing, which was expressive in ways you rarely see elsewhere and made the entire production feel fresh and unforgettable.
