Hello Dolly! – Story

The Plot / Summary of Hello Dolly!

The Plot / Summary of Hello Dolly!
Set in late 19th-century New York City and the nearby town of Yonkers, the story follows Dolly Levi (Bette Midler), a widow famous for her warmhearted yet determined work as a matchmaker. One of her clients is Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy but tightfisted feed-store owner from Yonkers with a reputation for being stubborn and outspoken.

Horace’s second request to Dolly is unusual: he asks her to stop his niece Ermengarde (Joyce Ames) from marrying Ambrose (Tommy Tune), a struggling young artist. Secretly, Dolly has feelings for Horace, but her first task for him had been introducing him to the fashionable milliner Irene Molloy, complicating her own hopes for romance.

Meanwhile, Ermengarde, heartbroken by her uncle’s refusal to accept Ambrose, turns to Dolly for help. She confides that she wants to elope, and Dolly—ever the meddler but always caring—begins to craft a daring plan, one that could unite the young couple while also opening the door for her own chance at love with Horace.

The action then moves to New York City. As Horace sets out to court Irene Molloy, Dolly seizes the moment to put her plan into motion. Will Ermengarde be able to marry the man she loves? And will Dolly finally win Horace’s heart in this celebrated Broadway musical comedy?

Hello, Dolly! – Review

Review from SONYSONY:

Old New York Brought to Life

It was truly spectacular – Bette Midler’s Hello, Dolly! The moment she stepped on stage, the entire audience gave her a standing ovation (she was smaller in person than expected), and she waved it down to start the show. Opposite David Hyde Pierce from the TV series “Frasier,” she delivered nonstop laughter while also portraying a heartfelt character from old New York that brought tears to the eyes. There was no trace of her rocker image from the film “The Rose,” but with her signature charisma, she gave a dazzling performance for audiences who had lived through that era. After the show, seeing Pierce patiently signing autographs for fans was touching (unfortunately, Midler did not appear). What an unforgettable Broadway experience!
