Little Miss Sunshine – Story

The Plot / Summary of Little Miss Sunshine

In New Mexico, Cheryl is a hardworking mother raising two children. Her husband Richard is a strict man trying to make a living as a motivational speaker. Their 15-year-old son Dwayne, influenced by Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence until he can achieve his dream of becoming a pilot and entering the Air Force Academy. Richard’s father Edwin, a heroin addict, lives with them, and he trains his charming 7-year-old granddaughter Olive in dance. Life in the household is always busy.

One day, Cheryl’s brother Frank moves in after a failed romance with one of his male students leads him to attempt suicide. With Frank now part of the family, the story begins.

Soon after, Olive learns that she has qualified to compete in the “Little Miss Sunshine Beauty Contest” in California, just two days away. Overjoyed, she prepares for the event.

The family decides to make the 800-mile journey from New Mexico to California in their beat-up yellow minibus. Though reluctant at first, everyone piles into the van and hits the road.

As they fix the aging bus along the way, the family faces challenge after challenge on their long trip. Will they make it to California in time, and will Olive be able to claim victory at the contest?
