Highlights of Matilda – Must-See Moments
Premiering at the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End in 2011, Matilda the Musical quickly became a hit and has finally made its way to Broadway! The show is based on the beloved children’s novel by British author Roald Dahl, who is also known for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.Developed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010, the production was met with instant acclaim and transferred to the West End the following year. It went on to achieve a historic milestone at the Olivier Awards, winning in seven categories including Best Actress in a Musical, cementing its place as one of the UK’s most celebrated musicals.
On Broadway, although the Best musical award went to Kinky Boots, Matilda still captured four Tony Awards including Best book of a musical. The four young actresses who shared the role of Matilda received a Special Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theatre in recognition of their remarkable performances.
This inspiring story, filled with courage, wit, and imagination, continues to captivate both adults and children alike. Matilda the Musical has become a worldwide favorite and remains one of the must-see shows on Broadway.

Matilda – Story
The Plot / Summary of Matilda
The one person who recognizes her gift is her kind teacher, Miss Honey. Impressed by Matilda’s extraordinary abilities, Miss Honey suggests moving her into a higher-level class. But the cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, refuses to listen. Known for punishing students under the guise of discipline and intimidating fellow teachers, she makes life at school unbearable.
One day, Matilda discovers she has telekinetic powers – the ability to move objects with her mind. After learning about Miss Honey’s tragic past, Matilda decides to use her unique gift to stand up to the adults who have mistreated them and change their lives for the better.

A little disappointing
I felt the direction could have included more from the adult perspective. For example, why Matilda’s parents treated her so poorly or more depth behind the headmistress’s actions. I wanted those layers of storytelling as well.

Blown away by the kids
The story itself is pretty familiar, but the performances were excellent. I was amazed by the energy and talent of the child actors. Their acting was on par with adults. I definitely want to see it again!

The child actors are on another level
The kids were absolutely outstanding. I was shocked to learn they were cast through auditions. Not only adorable and lively, but their singing and dancing were polished and professional. Highly recommend this musical!

Impressive young talent
The long lines delivered by the children were so impressive. I couldn’t believe how much they memorized. At times it felt a little stiff, though that might be because I don’t speak English fluently. The headmistress character was hilarious. Sitting near the front of the orchestra, I was completely immersed in the show.
