The Producers – About the Show

Highlights of The Producers – Must-See Moments

Highlights of The Producers - Must-See Moments The musical “The Producers” is one of the funniest and most Broadway-style musical comedies ever created. Based on Mel Brooks’ Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same title, this stage production brings his comedy genius to life. Brooks himself directed, wrote the script, and composed both the lyrics and music. Direction and choreography were handled by Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award winner (“Crazy for You,” “Contact,” “The Music Man”), ensuring a production with a rock-solid foundation.

At the 2001 Tony Awards, The Producers broke records by winning 12 out of 13 categories for which it was eligible, making history with the most wins ever for a new musical. It also earned numerous Drama Desk Awards and other honors. Following its Broadway success, the show was adapted into a 2005 film, achieving acclaim in both its musical and movie versions.

The Producers – Story

The Plot / Summary of The Producers

The Plot / Summary of The Producers
In 1959 New York, Broadway producer Max Bialystock was once hailed as the “King of Broadway,” but his career had fallen on hard times. His latest show, a musical version of *Hamlet* called *Funny Boy*, closed on opening night.

To survive, Max resorts to charming wealthy widows into writing checks to fund his next productions. One day, timid accountant Leo Bloom arrives to review the books and makes a shocking discovery: even though Max’s shows had failed, they still turned a profit because the money raised from investors exceeded the actual production costs.

Max suddenly hatches a scheme – what if they raised far more money than needed and deliberately produced a guaranteed flop – They’d keep the difference and walk away rich. Though hesitant at first, Leo embraces the dream of becoming a Broadway producer, and together they set out to create the worst musical in history.

Their choice – *Springtime for Hitler* – a wild, tasteless script that turns Hitler into a singing, dancing buffoon. With a flamboyant director and his eccentric team onboard, disaster seemed guaranteed. But on opening night, the unexpected happened: after a stunned first act, the audience erupted in laughter during the second, hailing it as a brilliant satire. Overnight, the “flop” became a smash hit. With no way to pay back their investors, Max and Leo are arrested and sent to prison.

Yet in jail, the unlikeliest thing happens. Max, who had never truly had a friend, finds one in Leo. And Leo, who had always doubted himself, discovers the joy of producing theater. They even stage a prison musical with the other inmates, winning praise and earning an early release. Free once more, Max and Leo return to Broadway, proving that for all its madness, this is why we love musicals.

The Producers – Review

Review by orenge-man:

An absolutely hilarious musical!

I had already watched the movie version of The Producers, but I felt I had to see the real Broadway musical, so I got tickets.

Since I already knew the story, I could anticipate the funny parts – “Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes… there it is!” – and I was laughing nonstop. The scenes about the gay characters and Hitler were especially entertaining on stage. The flamboyant characters had me cracking up too. Compared to the movie, the singing was so much more powerful and gave me goosebumps. I’ve watched the movie many times, but now I can’t wait to see the musical again!
