Rashad has won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play in both 2012 and 2013, making her one of Broadway’s most acclaimed young talents. The production is directed by five-time Tony Award nominee David Leveaux, known for his work on Nine and other acclaimed shows.
This modern interpretation sets the Montagues as a white family and the Capulets as a Black family, offering a powerful reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Romeo & Juliet – Story
The Plot / Summary of Romeo & Juliet
Juliet, the only daughter of the Capulet family, and Romeo, the only son of the Montague family, meet by chance at a ball and fall deeply in love.
Even after discovering they are from feuding families, their feelings remain unchanged. With the help of Friar Lawrence, who hopes to reconcile the two houses, Romeo and Juliet secretly marry and become husband and wife.
But their happiness is short-lived. When Romeo’s friend Mercutio is killed in a duel by Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, Romeo, enraged, avenges his friend and kills Tybalt. Though aided by his parents, Romeo is banished from Verona.
Meanwhile, Juliet falls into despair over Romeo’s exile. Her parents, hoping to comfort her, arrange her marriage to the nobleman Paris. Bound by her vow to Romeo, Juliet refuses.
Angered by her defiance, her parents threaten to disown her. Unable to reveal the truth and left completely isolated, Juliet turns in desperation to Friar Lawrence for help.
The friar proposes a daring plan: Juliet will take a potion that makes her appear dead, be laid to rest in the family tomb, and awaken to flee with Romeo once he arrives. But fate has other plans, and a tragic future awaits the two young lovers…
