Something Rotten! – Story

The Plot / Summary of Something Rotten!

The Plot / Summary of Something Rotten!
Set in Elizabethan London during the sixteenth century.

Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are struggling playwrights who have yet to write a single hit. Desperate to surpass William Shakespeare, they turn to a soothsayer named Nostradamus.

He foretells that the future of theater will involve actors who sing and dance as well as speak. Inspired, the Bottom brothers decide to create not a work called “Hamlet” but the world’s first musical, “Omelette.”

Nick keeps seeking advice from Nostradamus, though the prophecies are often unreliable. Determined to make “Omelette” a success, he pushes ahead while facing setback after setback.

Nigel, who has real writing talent, secretly hates the idea of creating a show about eggs. Torn between supporting his brother and pursuing his own artistic vision, he finds new inspiration when he falls in love with Portia, the daughter of a strict Puritan.

Meanwhile, Shakespeare faces pressure to follow the triumph of “Romeo and Juliet” with another major success. Admiring Nigel’s talent, he disguises himself as an actor named “Toby Belch” and infiltrates the Bottoms’ troupe, stealing ideas that will ultimately shape his masterpiece “Hamlet.” But will his plan work or collapse spectacularly?

Behind the Scenes of Something Rotten!

Flower button iconミュージカル の豆知識Fast-paced comedy packed with everything you love about musicals

Something Rotten! began as an idea that brothers Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick had been developing since the 1990s. Working with John O’Farrell, one of the United Kingdom’s best-known comedy writers and playwrights, they shaped the story into its final form. The musical was originally planned to have a 2015 tryout at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. However, when a Broadway venue unexpectedly opened up, the producers took the chance and skipped the out-of-town run, bringing the show straight to Broadway. The result is a lively, fast-paced comedy that delivers the full excitement of a big Broadway musical.
