Soul Doctor – About the Show

Highlights of Soul Doctor – Must-See Moments

Highlights of Soul Doctor - Must-See Moments Broadway musical Soul Doctor, based on the extraordinary life of real-life rabbi and musician Shlomo Carlebach, had its world premiere in the summer of 2012 at the New York Theatre Workshop, the same Off-Broadway venue where the legendary musical RENT first opened. After a year of anticipation, it finally arrived on Broadway.

The arrangements were created by Steve Margoshes, who won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best musical Show Album for Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Eric Anderson, who received the Drama Desk Award during the Off-Broadway run, returns to star once again as Shlomo Carlebach – a major highlight of this production.

Adding to the powerhouse creative team, sound design comes from John Shivers, who later won the 2013 Tony Award for his work on Kinky Boots. With such acclaimed talent behind the story, audiences can expect not only a moving production but also music that truly brings Soul Doctor to life on the Broadway stage.

Soul Doctor – Story

The Plot / Summary of Soul Doctor

The Plot / Summary of Soul Doctor
Amid the turmoil of war, young Shlomo and his family lost their home while fleeing the Nazis. They eventually settled in Brooklyn, where he grew up surrounded by Jewish teachings.

As an adult, Shlomo struggled to bring people into his father’s synagogue. He experimented with new musical arrangements inspired by Jewish tradition, but nothing seemed to work.

One night, by sheer coincidence, he wandered into a jazz club and met a Black musician who dreamed of becoming a classical pianist and performing at Carnegie Hall. That woman was Nina Simone, who would later become a legendary figure in jazz and soul music.

They connected deeply through music and shared experiences. Nina faced discrimination as a Black woman from the American South, while Shlomo carried the trauma of being a Jewish refugee forced from his homeland.

Through Nina, Shlomo discovered the emotional power of gospel and soul. His curiosity eventually led him to visit a Christian church, where, despite some initial tension, the congregation welcomed him with warmth. But back home, his father and the surrounding Jewish community fiercely opposed this connection. In the end, Shlomo was forced to leave his home.

While wandering through a park, he met a homeless guitarist and began learning the instrument. This sparked a new musical style that blended Jewish melodies with various genres. His performances touched troubled young people, and his growing reputation soon attracted the attention of a record label. His albums became popular, and his concerts quickly sold out.

Shlomo gradually drifted away from traditional religious structures and focused on a more exploratory musical path. Still, the boundaries of his faith stayed with him, even making simple gestures, such as shaking Nina’s hand, feel forbidden.

His life eventually became the subject of controversy, which caused painful fractures within his family. Yet ironically, the scandal only increased his fame.

In San Francisco, Shlomo founded his own spiritual community, The House of Love and Prayer. It became a refuge for hippies and young people searching for meaning. But after his father’s death and the gradual disappearance of his young followers, the community dissolved.

Though he later married, Shlomo gave much of his income to those in need. His life became a mission to spread love and peace through music. Where that journey ultimately leads is left for the audience to imagine…

Soul Doctor – Review

Review from Machilda:

Soul Doctor was even better than I expected!

The theater wasn’t too big, so no matter where you sat, you felt close to the stage and really part of the experience. The set and lighting worked beautifully together, making the story stand out even more.

There were moments when the cast came down into the aisles, and it felt like the audience and performers were completely connected. The moving lights swept across the whole auditorium, not just the actors, which added to the excitement.

The choreography included clever use of props, and the curved set design created real depth. With levels and platforms built into the stage, different locations and times were shown seamlessly at once. That kind of attention to detail is what makes Broadway so special.

The live band was performing right on stage, and because they were so close to the actors, the music matched every breath and expression perfectly.

From jazz to gospel to rock, the variety of music kept things fresh and engaging the whole time. Visually and musically, it pulled me into the story completely. Soul Doctor is absolutely a must-see!
