Behind the Scenes of SpongeBob SquarePants
About the Original SpongeBob SquarePants
This Broadway musical is based on the hit American animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. The story follows SpongeBob and his friends in the undersea city of Bikini Bottom. The show was created by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg.
Since its debut in 1999, over 200 episodes have aired in more than 170 countries and 35 languages, making SpongeBob one of the most successful animated series in the world. In Japan, it began broadcasting in 2000 and gained popularity through character merchandise. Today, SpongeBob continues to expand across TV, films, video games, and global merchandise.
The 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie grossed more than $100 million worldwide, an outstanding achievement in animation. The beloved cartoon was adapted into a stage musical in Chicago in 2016, before officially opening on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in winter 2017.
Famous Musicians Behind the Songs
The Broadway production features original songs from world-renowned artists. Aerosmith contributed “Bikini Bottom Boogie,” featured in the second act, while David Bowie co-wrote “No Control,” performed early in the show. This was one of Bowie’s final compositions before his passing in January 2016. Bowie was also known as a longtime SpongeBob fan, even guest-starring as a voice actor in the animated series.
Tony Award-Winning Designs by David Zinn
The production design was created by David Zinn, a four-time Tony Award winner for costume and scenic design. His work transforms the theater into SpongeBob’s underwater world from the moment the audience enters. The stage and auditorium are decorated with neon lights, balloons, and sea-themed props, immersing the audience in an oceanic atmosphere.
Merchandise and playful decorations can be found throughout the theater, capturing SpongeBob’s colorful spirit. Instead of costumes resembling full-body suits, Zinn designed imaginative original outfits, creatively incorporating props to portray sea creatures in a fresh, theatrical way.

Review from Jiro:
Powerful Vocals
The first half felt a little slow, but the second half was much stronger. The singing voices really impressed me. Sitting for two and a half hours straight was tough, though!

Review from Garake Jidai:
Patrick Stole the Show
I’ve always loved the SpongeBob cartoon, so I had to see the Broadway version. The theater, right in the middle of Times Square, was amazing in itself. Inside, it really felt like stepping into SpongeBob’s world. Drinks were pricey, but I couldn’t resist! SpongeBob wasn’t exactly how I imagined, but Patrick was absolutely adorable and hilarious. Squidward was also fantastic, he reminded me of a character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Highly recommended!

Review from Risako:
SpongeBob Was Adorable
The actor playing SpongeBob was simply adorable! His way of bringing the character to life on stage was spot on. Since all the characters are originally cartoons, it was fascinating to see how they were reimagined in a live-action Broadway performance.
