Waitress – Story
The Plot / Summary of Waitress
One day, Joe, a regular customer at the diner, tells her about an upcoming pie contest. Jenna sees this as her chance to win the prize money and finally leave her husband behind.
Just as she begins to plan her escape, Jenna discovers she is pregnant. When she goes to her usual clinic, she finds her doctor has left and is replaced by the young Dr. Jim Pomatter. Jenna tells him she does not want to hear any congratulations, as she is not happy about the pregnancy.
As Jenna continues her checkups, she and Dr. Pomatter develop a complicated relationship. Meanwhile, her coworker Dawn struggles with Ogie, an eccentric man she met through online dating, and her other colleague Becky seems to be hiding a secret of her own.
Will these three women find the happiness they are searching for?

It felt quite different from the movie, so I would not recommend it for movie fans. But if you enjoy musicals and want to experience something with a different flavor, the tickets are affordable and worth it. The stage set recreated the vibe of a cafe abroad and was very cute, especially with its colors.

The music was very appealing. It seems the show is not very well known among some audiences, but the mix of comedy and serious moments made it a really enjoyable experience. The English is not too difficult, so I would definitely recommend it. I am sad it is closing, but glad I got to see it before the end.

I decided to see it since it was about to close. The actress playing Jenna sang beautifully. I later looked her up at home and found out she was Jordin Sparks, who had won an American Idol competition. Even within the same “idol” concept, I realized how different the vocal power is between the U.S. and Japan, which was impressive. The story itself may divide opinions. It was full of American humor and even had an affair storyline, which makes it something you would not often see in Japan.

Maybe because it was a comedy, the English felt too fast for me to follow. Unlike the movie, it was not as serious, but I still enjoyed listening to the songs.

If you understand English, you can enjoy the show even more, so I recommend preparing in advance if language is a concern. Since it is a comedic production, you leave the theater with a happy feeling. Both the costumes and the stage design were very cute.
