I chose Hell's Kitchen after being recommended by a senior from my university days (a musical geek). Since I was traveling alone during Golden Week, I planned my itinerary based on recommendations and introductions from various people. Watching the musical was the most memorable experience of my stay. It was especially good because I was studying Black music and its history in a university seminar.
I was skeptical, wondering if it was a production aimed at Japanese tourists unfamiliar with musicals, but I found it to be truly entertaining.
The touching final scene and Empire State of Mind brought me to tears.
My wife and I had a lively conversation after the show, saying, "That was a really great show."
We enjoyed Hell's Kitchen so much that we quickly arranged additional tickets for Sunset Blvd through Atto New York. Thank you for your quick response!
I purchased tickets to Hell's Kitchen here three days ago.

It was a Sunday matinee performance, but the Broadway theater district was packed with people.
I didn't see any Japanese or Asians.
The thought of everyone going to see a musical really made me realize how passionate Westerners are about musicals.
The theater was full. My seat was on the side of the first floor, close to the stage, so I had a good view, but I would later regret it.
The musical began with Ali, playing Alicia Keys, explaining that the setting is Hell's Kitchen, a little west of this theater.
The audience was enthusiastic from the start, and I could sense the enthusiasm of Americans and Westerners.
Ali and the other New York children are free-spirited, with music and rhythm ubiquitous in their lives.
The singing ability of both Ali's mother and father was impressive. It gave me goosebumps. Is there some innate vocal power that Japanese people simply can't match? The woman who sang the classic song "Fire" near the end of the first act was also incredibly talented.
This production was centered around the music, and as an R&B fan, I particularly enjoyed it. Hearing authentic New York rhythm and blues live at full volume was an incredible experience.
Unfortunately, I bought my tickets at the last minute, so I wasn't in the best seats and ended up on the edge of the first floor.
Anyway, about half of the performance was focused on concert-like music. The sound speakers were installed quite high up the wings of the stage, so the sound should have been better on the second floor than on the first floor. Also, my seat on the side of the first floor meant that the sound from one speaker on the right side was emphasized. This historic Shubert Theatre has a second floor that juts out quite far, so the stage seems close even from the second floor. Therefore, I think the seats in the middle of the second floor were the best seats for this performance.
Anyway, I'm glad I was able to see this wonderful musical in my spare time.
I read that MJ's music is pop, but the performance is similarly concert-like, so next time I come I'd like to see MJ and compare it to the original.
The musical Hell's Kitchen was a 100% perfect musical, full of energy.
Is this musical popular? When I was researching what to see, I saw a lot of advertisements and promotions for it on Instagram and X, and quite a few people said they were moved by it, so I bought a ticket. It seems to be a relatively new (?) production, and it has a minor feel to it, so I'm looking forward to it.

Behind the Scenes of Hell’s Kitchen
From Off-Broadway to Broadway in Record Time
Hell’s Kitchen began previews on October 24, 2023, and officially opened on November 19 at The Public Theater in NoHo, just west of Washington Square. Backed by Alicia Keys’s own promotion, the premiere created major buzz right from the start. The production was embraced enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike. By December 4, less than a month later, it was announced that the show would transfer to Broadway, with previews starting at the Shubert Theatre on March 28, 2024. With a stellar cast, bold staging, and unforgettable music, the production seemed destined for Broadway from the very beginning.
Not a Direct Autobiography of Alicia Keys
The story is inspired by Alicia Keys’s experiences but is not a literal retelling of her life. Instead, it explores themes of growing up in New York, self-discovery, and the ambition to succeed. As Keys herself has said: “This show is inspired by my life, but it is not my biography. It’s about finding yourself, discovering purpose, and chasing dreams.”The score reimagines her iconic hits and introduces new songs, blending R&B, pop, and soul into the fabric of the story. Keys’s music deepens the emotional impact, allowing audiences to feel the struggles and triumphs of the characters. Even those who are new to musicals, or who think they may not enjoy the genre, often leave feeling, “Musicals can be fun!” Thanks to its choreography, staging, and heartfelt message, Hell’s Kitchen captures the energy and pride of New York City.
A Truly Star-Studded Original Cast
Shoshana Bean, who plays Ali’s mother Jersey, made her Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning Hairspray and went on to star as Elphaba in Wicked, including on the national tour. She is celebrated for her powerhouse vocals and stage presence. Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Ali’s father Davis, has starred in Motown: The Musical as part of the original cast and portrayed Aaron Burr in Hamilton, among other acclaimed roles.Among this lineup of accomplished performers, the breakout star is Maleah Joi Moon, born in 2002, who plays Ali. Handpicked by Alicia Keys after a competitive audition, Moon made her Broadway debut in Hell’s Kitchen – and went on to win the 2024 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. With her distinctive husky voice, powerful vocals, and heartfelt acting, she delivers a performance that is both captivating and unforgettable. Our staff strongly recommends experiencing the show while the original cast is still performing – you’ll understand why audiences are falling in love with her talent.
