Anastasia – Story
The Plot / Summary of Anastasia
Ten years later, Anastasia has grown into a young woman. On the night of a ball, she joins her family for a portrait, only for the palace to be suddenly attacked by the Bolsheviks. Amid the chaos, Anastasia returns to retrieve her treasured music box, and the palace is engulfed in flames. News spreads that the entire Romanov family has been killed.
Yet rumors soon circulate in St. Petersburg that Anastasia might still be alive. Grieving her lost family, Marie offers a reward to anyone who can find her granddaughter. Meanwhile, two con men, Dmitry and Vlad, plot to find a young woman who could impersonate Anastasia and claim the fortune. They encounter Anya, a girl with no memory of her past, and together they set off for Paris.
As Anya’s journey unfolds, she begins to rediscover her true identity. But the Bolshevik officer Gleb, under orders to eliminate the last of the Romanovs, is also on her trail. After hardships and revelations, Anya finally comes face to face with Marie, just as Gleb closes in on his target.

Behind the Scenes of Anastasia
A real historical disappearance
The musical “Anastasia” is based on the legendary mystery known as the Anastasia legend. In 1918, while news spread that the Romanov family had been executed, rumors circulated that Princess Anastasia had survived, leading to countless books and mysteries published around the world.
Because of the tragic fate of the Romanovs, many stories are dark and somber. By contrast, the Broadway musical “Anastasia” focuses on a love story that crosses social boundaries, offering entertainment that both adults and children can enjoy – an experience you can only find on Broadway.
LED screens create dynamic stage backdrops
Although the set of “Anastasia” is simple, it uses LED screens for its background design. Combined with CG and projection mapping, the stage delivers stunning visuals – from a train racing across the tracks to dreamlike scenes reflecting Anastasia’s emotions.
The Paris cityscape where Anastasia searches for her memories, the ghosts dancing around the ruined palace, and the dazzling costumes all immerse the audience into her fairytale-like world.
Twenty new songs added by award-winning creators
The animated film’s music was highly acclaimed, earning nominations for Best Original Song and Best Original Score at the 70th Academy Awards. For the stage adaptation, approximately 20 brand-new songs were added.
The score was composed by Stephen Flaherty, a Tony Award winner for “Ragtime,” with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, who also wrote the film’s lyrics.
The book was written by Tony-winning playwright Terrence McNally, and the direction was led by Darko Tresnjak. Among the many works inspired by the “Anastasia” legend, this Broadway musical stands out thanks to its powerhouse creative team and is truly worth seeing.

The lead actress was very cute, but the rest of the cast didn’t really stand out. The singing was decent, maybe slightly above average. Since it’s not a famous show, I wasn’t expecting much, but it was more enjoyable than I thought. The projection mapping was impressive, though it felt a little repetitive toward the end. Some of the songs did have memorable melodies that stuck with me.

Watched on a friend’s recommendation
A friend recommended both *Aladdin* and *Anastasia*. Of course, I already knew *Aladdin* and had seen the movie,
but with *Anastasia* I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the musical turned out to be amazing! The lead actress was adorable, the costumes and music were beautiful, and everything really appealed to me. After returning home, I immediately watched the animated film and became a big fan of *Anastasia*.
