A Bronx Tale – Story
The Plot / Summary of A Bronx Tale
One day, Calogero witnesses Sonny shoot a man dead in broad daylight after a confrontation. When questioned by the police, Calogero lies to protect Sonny, earning the mobster’s trust and becoming someone special in his eyes.
Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, a hardworking bus driver and proud Italian immigrant, disapproves of their relationship. To him, Sonny represents danger and corruption, while he believes in honest work and integrity. Despite his father’s warnings, Calogero is increasingly drawn into Sonny’s world, spending more time with the mob boss than with his own family.
Eight years later, at 17, Calogero has become Sonny’s favorite and is now known simply as “C.” While he hangs around with troublemaking friends, he also remains close to Sonny. Things take a turn when Calogero falls in love with Jane, a young Black girl from his high school. Their romance faces strong opposition in a community divided by racial tensions between Italian-Americans and African-Americans in the Bronx.
Conflict escalates when C’s friends plan a violent attack on Jane’s neighborhood. Sonny intervenes, forcefully stopping Calogero and saving him from making a life-altering mistake. Unbeknownst to Calogero, Sonny had anticipated the violence and chose to protect him.
When C goes to thank Sonny, tragedy strikes. Right before his eyes, Sonny is shot by the son of the man he once killed. The question remains: will Sonny survive, and can Calogero repair the strained relationship with his father before it is too late?

Behind the Scenes of A Bronx Tale
From One-Man Show to Film and Broadway Musical
A Bronx Tale is based on the 1993 film of the same name, but its roots go back to an Off-Broadway one-man show written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, who also played mob boss Sonny in the movie.
In 1988, when Palminteri was still struggling as an actor, he staged his self-written play as a limited-run solo performance in which he portrayed 18 different characters by himself. The show ran for about four months and created such a buzz that it launched him into the spotlight.
This caught the attention of Robert De Niro, who brought the story to the screen. De Niro, a two-time Academy Award winner and one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, made his directorial debut with the film while also serving as producer and starring as the young boy’s father. Years later, he was tapped to co-direct the Broadway adaptation of A Bronx Tale.
A Collaboration Between Two Bronx Natives
Both Robert De Niro, who directed the film and the Broadway musical, and Chazz Palminteri, who wrote the original script, grew up in the Bronx in Italian-American families. The two first worked together on the 1993 film version.
De Niro, known for his uncompromising commitment to his roles, and Palminteri, who believed in his story even when success was far off, brought their shared experiences to the stage. The result is a production that feels deeply personal and authentic, recreating the Bronx they knew and the truths they lived through.
The Bronx in the 1960s Brought to Life
Set in the 1960s, A Bronx Tale portrays a neighborhood divided by turf wars between Italian-American and African-American youth, with organized crime present on every corner.
Unlike traditional racial discrimination narratives, both Italian immigrants and African Americans were social minorities in America at the time, and their conflicts were driven more by territorial disputes than pure prejudice.
Against this backdrop, the story follows the coming-of-age of one young boy as he navigates family expectations, rebellion, and the lessons that ultimately lead him to understand loyalty and love. It is a moving portrait of community, conflict, and family bonds.
