Cabaret – Story
The Plot / Summary of Cabaret
The central figures are Cliff, an American writer newly arrived in Berlin, and Sally Bowles, a British singer and dancer at the cabaret. Cliff is drawn to Sally’s free-spirited nature. When Sally suddenly loses her job at the Kit Kat Club, she packs her belongings and moves into Cliff’s apartment.
As they spend more time together, their romance blossoms, yet the looming war strains their relationship. Sally dreams of reclaiming her place on stage at the Kit Kat Club, while Cliff longs to return to America and escape the tension, hoping to take Sally with him. Their different choices gradually drive them apart.
Sally decides to remain in Berlin to chase her ambitions, while Cliff, increasingly aware of the Nazi threat, struggles with the painful divide between them. Their opposing paths reflect the challenges and hopes of people caught in a society on the brink of disaster.
The story portrays how war and social upheaval tear apart lives and relationships. Its shocking turns and unforgettable ending leave a lasting impression. Yet, in true Cabaret style, moments of humor lighten the weight, including the appearance of a gorilla costume that symbolizes freedom and escape, adding both irony and wit to this powerful tale.

Cabaret – Theater
August Wilson Theatre – Home of Cabaret
The August Wilson Theatre first opened in 1925 as the Guild Theatre. It was designed by architect C. Howard Crane, who was involved in more than 250 projects across North America, and built by Kenneth Franzheim, known for his work on commercial buildings and airports. In 1981, the theatre was acquired by Jujamcyn Theaters, the major operator that also owns the St. James Theatre and the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. At that time, it was renamed the Virginia Theatre after Virginia McKnight Binger, who was then an owner and director of the company.
In the summer of 2005, Jujamcyn Theaters renamed it in honor of the American playwright August Wilson, giving the venue its current name, the August Wilson Theatre.
Is August Wilson Theatre Area Safe for Visitors?

The Seating Chart of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club
The show’s official title is Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. In the story, the action takes place inside the famous Kit Kat Club, but in real life audiences watch it at the August Wilson Theatre. This theatre, which once hosted Mean Girls, is known for its pale orange exterior and elegant European-style windows. The theatre is just north of Times Square. Inside, the seats surround a circular stage, so the performance feels close and immersive. Before the show begins, staff place stickers over phone cameras to prevent photos, and each guest is handed a small shot glass, setting the mood as if you’ve stepped into a real cabaret.
The lighting inside is dim, and from the moment you enter, the atmosphere feels like an intimate, adults-only world.
The best seats for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club
Because the seating surrounds the circular stage, every seat offers a good view. The orchestra seats are especially popular since cast members often move through the audience. The mezzanine is slightly farther back but provides a clear perspective of the entire production.
The closest tables on the orchestra level are premium seats, which include Moet champagne and a light meal course (with both meat and vegetarian options). The three-tier silver tray holds appetizers on the top, a main selection such as ham or salami in the middle, and olives or grapes on the bottom. During intermission, a raspberry cheesecake is also served, creating a truly special experience.

My wife and I went to see the show together.
The crowd around us was a diverse mix, including parents and children, couples, friends, and solo tourists.
Even though it was aimed at adults, I was a little worried about whether it was appropriate for an older couple like us to watch, but once the show started, all those worries were blown away and we had a great time.
We watched from the second floor, but we felt closer to the stage than we expected, which was great.
It was our first trip in a while, and we had a great time just hanging out together as a couple.
I was so happy to finally get to see the cabaret I'd been wanting to see. Since I had the chance, I bought a premium table seat on the first floor and enjoyed a course meal. It was truly a luxurious experience. The stage was circular, so I felt like I had a good view from any seat. The dancers were very diverse and it was really fun to watch. The actress who played Sally was an excellent singer, and despite her small stature, she was full of energy. I highly recommend this production.
It was a very unique theater and left a lasting impression on me - I personally felt like I was in a museum. I didn't have to worry too much about my seat position, and it was easy to see from anywhere.
At first, I wasn't really sure what this performance was about, but thanks to Atto New York's kind advice and support, I was able to decide on this performance! I'm so grateful to Atto New York for all the trouble I caused them because I was so indecisive.
The production, stage, and costumes of the cast are all bold and captivating. A musical for adults.
