The Broadway musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is based on Roald Dahl’s world-famous children’s novel. While the book may seem like a simple children’s story, Dahl’s writing is often described as having a “strange taste,” full of satire and dark humor. The novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory embodies this style, offering sharp wit and hidden layers that reveal the complexities of human nature.

Although the plot follows children exploring the magical chocolate factory, the dialogue and actions carry an unsettling edge that reflects deeper human emotions. This makes the story entertaining for children while also offering a powerful experience for adults who can appreciate its darker undertones.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Review

Oompa-Loompas!

Such a fun show! The costumes and set design truly captured the world of Charlie. The Oompa-Loompas were by far the most memorable part, what a clever and creative staging choice! I was also impressed by the young cast’s acting skills. Definitely one of my favorite musicals.

With My 14-Year-Old Son

I went with my 14-year-old son, and even though neither of us speaks English, we still had a wonderful time. The costumes were adorable, and we both agreed the performances were fantastic. It even made me think more seriously about having my son study English!

Oompa

Maybe the original book was too iconic, or maybe Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s movie left too strong an impression. This stage version felt like it lacked some of that intensity. I was curious about how they would portray the Oompa-Loompas, and while the staging made sense, it didn’t quite wow me. The kids in the cast, however, were all very charming.

Movie Lover

I’ve always loved the film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” so when I visited New York I knew I had to see this musical. I was especially curious about how they would bring the Oompa-Loompas to life. Their entrance in plushy costumes was adorable and really fun to watch.
