CHESS – Story
The Plot / Summary of CHESS
As the match intensifies, political forces close in. Walter de Courcey, an American agent, and Alexander Molokov, representing Soviet power, turn the tournament into a battle of ideology, transforming chess into a symbolic war between superpowers. Meanwhile, the connection between Anatoly and Florence deepens rapidly.
Freddie, unable to cope with losing Florence, spirals into emotional collapse. He can no longer play, and Anatoly wins by default. Anatoly decides to defect to the West, and Florence helps him carry out the defection.
Four years later, in 1983, as global tensions rise during the Able Archer military exercise and the threat of nuclear conflict looms, a title match is held in Bangkok. Anatoly defends his championship against a new Soviet challenger, Leonid Viigand, and wins once again. But Alexander, determined to bring him back, arrives with Anatoly’s wife, Svetlana, using the safety of his family as leverage to force his return.
Anatoly gives in to political pressure and decides to return to the Soviet Union. However, he makes Molokov promise him one thing in return. And that condition is…

Because this production is staged in a semi-concert style, many of the songs are performed facing forward at center stage. For that reason, seats located directly in front of the stage are especially recommended.
At the same time, the show uses minimal scenery, which means there are very few seats where important moments are visually obstructed.

It felt like a rock musical. The focus is really on the music, and it almost felt like I was at a live concert.
The casting was very strong. Aaron Tveit's Freddie felt thrillingly on the edge, and the contrast with Christopher's Anatoly was spot on.
Seeing it at the Imperial Theatre made it even better. The music was great too, though I was hoping for staging with a bit more punch.
It was easier to follow than I expected, and I really enjoyed it. The mix of romance and politics made it such a compelling drama. I was especially moved by Lea Michele's "Heaven Help My Heart" - I originally discovered the song through Idina Menzel's performance, so hearing it live was really emotional.
