Dear Evan Hansen – Story
The Plot / Summary of Dear Evan Hansen
One day, Evan breaks his arm and starts wearing a cast. In America, it’s common for classmates to sign a cast with messages of encouragement. But for the isolated Evan, his cast remains blank, a painful reminder of his loneliness.
Then tragedy strikes. His classmate Connor Murphy suddenly takes his own life. With no note left behind and no close friends to explain his actions, the reason remains a mystery. In his pocket, however, Connor’s parents discover Evan’s self-written letter beginning with “Dear Evan Hansen…” Believing it to be Connor’s final note to Evan, they assume the two were close friends. Evan, unable to tell the truth, goes along with the lie.
This lie changes everything. Connor’s grieving parents begin treating Evan like the son they lost, giving him the family warmth he has never known. He also grows closer to Zoe, Connor’s sister and the girl he secretly admired. Suddenly, Evan, once invisible, finds himself at the center of attention at school and even becomes a viral sensation through social media.
“A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have.”
Evan finally tastes the “normal life” he always longed for – even if it is built on a lie.

A Broadway Hit That Started Off-Broadway

Remarkably, the original cast—including Ben Platt as Evan—remained intact, carrying the same company into its Broadway production. The Story Behind Dear Evan Hansen
The inspiration for Dear Evan Hansen came from the personal experiences of its songwriting duo, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Two key events shaped the story. The first was Pasek’s own high school experience of losing a classmate to a drug overdose. Much like the character Connor, his classmate had few friends, and after his death, students organized a memorial to ensure he would not be forgotten. The second influence was the September 11 attacks in 2001. In the aftermath, social media emerged as a tool that could instantly share information worldwide, a reality woven into the narrative of the show.
In 2011, Pasek and Paul approached playwright Steven Levenson to collaborate on the project. The three creators, using the acronym “PPL Project” from their initials, spent five years developing what would become the award-winning Broadway musical.

I was so moved that I cried. It's a wonderful piece!
I've always wanted to watch Dear Evan Hansen. It wasn't a glamorous play, but it reminded me of what I've forgotten in this society where social media is so prevalent. I'd say the English is average. There were a lot of scenes where the characters spoke quickly, so it took me a while to understand what was going on. It's a moving human drama.
I heard "Waving Through Window" on YouTube and decided to go see it. The chorus of this song is the best, but after researching the lyrics and learning the story, I saw the actual performance and cried when I heard this song. I felt that it was singing about the sensitive, incredibly overwhelmed, and overwhelming feelings of anxiety and conflict that come with being a teenager. Thank you.
When I think of Broadway, I imagine flashy singing and dancing, but this production was completely different. If you're looking for dance or flashy performances, other musicals are definitely better.
As the description of the production says, it's about Evan finding his place in the world, and his life, which had been isolated from others, changes drastically, and he begins to interact with people, and in the process, he finds important answers.
I felt like I was Evan, and I was so engrossed in the story that I found myself crying by the end.
My wife and daughter went to see Frozen, so I chose this film.
(I'm glad I didn't go with my daughter, as there were some sexually charged comments typical of high school students.) The story was as good as the reviews said. Even though he was the one who lied, even an adult would hesitate to find the courage to deny the lies he'd been told.
I was moved by his courage in the final scene. Maybe because I was alone, I got a good seat in the fifth row from the front, so I was very happy. I'm glad I made the right choice.
Rather than being an exciting story, it was one that really made me think. If I wasn't concentrating, I'd just let the English slide, and even when I tried hard, there were parts I couldn't understand, but I still felt the same way as the main character and was heartbroken.
Recently, more and more people in Japan have been raising funds through crowdfunding, but I wonder if it's more common in the States.
I didn't know you could raise money through social media. I could never do that...
It's something that could happen to anyone, where a lie you tell on the spur of the moment can get bigger and become unmanageable. At the end, he confesses that he had lied, and even though he's criticized, I was moved by the way he continues to move forward. Personally, this was the best musical I've seen this year. I want to see it again.
The themes of complicated teenage students, suicide, and social media were very real and painful, but equally touching. There were many people in the audience crying, and it was a heavy feeling, but the theme song? It made me feel like I was looking up even though it was sad, and it made me feel cheerful. I highly recommend this piece.
It was a play that made me think about life. I don't see plays like this in Japan, so it felt very original and refreshing. I would definitely recommend this production to anyone who is used to musicals.
I went to see it because I read that people cried a lot. I felt that the language barrier was a bit overwhelming, and I felt that musicals with a lot of dancing would be a better fit. However, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and the songs were beautiful.
