Escape to Margaritaville was performed at the Marquis Theatre in the heart of Times Square, which was transformed into a tropical escape. From the moment audiences entered, it felt like stepping straight into an island paradise, complete with balloons, palm trees and even a treehouse on stage. Ushers and staff dressed in aloha shirts added to the festive atmosphere. A favorite part of the experience was enjoying a frozen margarita from the theater bar, the perfect drink to match the island-inspired musical.

Our At Broadway staff also created a detailed report of this tropical theater experience. Please see the link below for more.

Escape to Margaritaville – Story

The Plot / Summary of Escape to Margaritaville

The Plot / Summary of Escape to Margaritaville
Set on a tropical island called Margaritaville, the story unfolds in a paradise where tourists flock each year in search of relaxation and escape.

Tully, the carefree singer at the island’s Margaritaville restaurant, spends his days entertaining guests and his nights drinking and dancing with his easygoing friend Brick, embracing the ultimate island lifestyle.

Everything changes when Tully meets two visitors, Rachel and Tammy. Rachel is a career-focused woman who dislikes wasting time on leisure. She only joined the trip to celebrate Tammy’s engagement, and the last thing she wanted was attention from Tully, the very type of man she thought she could never like.

Unlike the many tourists who come and go, Rachel sparks Tully’s curiosity. He asks her out, and although she is resistant to his free-spirited charm, their conversations gradually bring them closer together as they share their hopes and frustrations.

After a week, the day of Rachel’s departure arrives. Tully pleads with her to stay and build a life with him, but Rachel chooses to return home, putting her career first. Left heartbroken, Tully drifts without direction until disaster strikes—the island’s volcano erupts, forcing an evacuation. In the chaos, Tully must decide where his true future lies and whether love is worth the leap.

Behind the Scenes of Escape to Margaritaville

Flower button icon Escape to Margaritaville Broadway TriviaWho Is Jimmy Buffett?

Jimmy Buffett, the creator of the world of “Margaritaville” and the composer and lyricist for this Broadway musical, began his career as a singer in the late 1960s. His third album, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean (1973), featured the hit “Margaritaville”, which became an anthem of island living. He went on to release other classics such as “Come Monday”, inspiring a devoted fan base known as “Parrotheads” and cementing his place as one of America’s most iconic singer-songwriters.

In 1984, Buffett expanded his brand by opening two restaurants named after his signature songs, Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise. What started as a tropical-themed concept grew into an international chain with locations across the United States, South America and the Caribbean.

Buffett is also a No.1 bestselling author. His books Tales from Margaritaville, Where Is Joe Merchant?, and A Pirate Looks at Fifty all reached the top of The New York Times bestseller lists in both fiction and nonfiction. He is one of only seven authors in history to hold that distinction in both categories.

Choreography was by Kelly Devine, celebrated for her work on Come From Away and nominated for her choreography in the 2014 musical Rocky. Together, they crafted a vibrant and tropical stage experience that transported audiences into Jimmy Buffett’s island world.

The leading role of Tully was played by Paul Alexander Nolan, known for his performances in Chicago and Once. Opposite him, Alison Luff starred as Rachel, bringing her experience from major musicals like Mamma Mia!, Matilda the Musical, and Les Miserables.

As Tully’s best friend Brick, Eric Petersen brought comic relief and charisma to the stage. Petersen had previously performed as the alternate for Shrek in Shrek the Musical (2008, winner of the Tony Award for Best Costume Design and nominated in seven categories) and as the alternate for Dewey Finn in School of Rock (2016, Tony Award-nominated for Best musical).

Though Brick was technically a supporting role, Petersen’s expressive acting and impeccable comedic timing made him a standout presence, adding humor and warmth to the production.

Brought Back Miami Memories

When I lived in Miami, my host father was a big Jimmy Buffett fan, so I often listened to his music. This musical, filled with his songs, was so fun and uplifting. It reminded me of Key West and all those sunny days!
