History of the Marquis Theatre
A theater built inside the New York Marriott Marquis
The Marquis Theatre is located inside the New York Marriott Marquis, one of the largest hotels in the Times Square area. Before the hotel and theater were built, the site was home to five historic Broadway theaters: the original Helen Hayes Theatre, the Morosco Theatre, the Bijou Theatre, the Astor Theatre, and the Gaiety Theatre.
In the 1970s, plans were announced to demolish these theaters to make way for the new hotel development. Because of their historic and cultural significance, the proposal sparked strong opposition from New Yorkers and became one of the most controversial redevelopment projects in Broadway history.
As part of the development, a new Broadway theater was created inside the hotel. Architect John C. Portman Jr. was commissioned for the project, and the Marquis Theatre opened in 1986 inside the New York Marriott Marquis. Its first production, the musical “Me and My Girl,” became a Broadway hit, earning 11 Tony Award nominations and winning 3 awards at the 41st Tony Awards in 1987. The production ran for 1,420 performances over three years. In 2002, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” also became a major success at the Marquis Theatre, earning 11 Tony Award nominations and winning 6.
One of Broadway’s newest large theaters
As one of Broadway’s newest large theaters, the Marquis Theatre is equipped with modern facilities. Lighting and sound equipment are positioned to avoid obstructing the audience’s view, allowing productions to create detailed stage effects. Today, the Marquis Theatre is owned and operated by the Nederlander Organization, one of Broadway’s major theater operators.
A rare Broadway theater with an entrance facing Broadway
Most Broadway theaters are located in the Theater District but not directly on Broadway itself. The Marquis Theatre is a rare example with theater access connected to Broadway through the New York Marriott Marquis. Although its official address is 210 West 46th Street, its box office and one of its entrances face Broadway, making it especially convenient for visitors exploring Times Square.
Accessibility at the Marquis Theatre
Designed with accessibility in mind for both performers and audiences
Most Broadway theaters were built in the 1910s and 1920s, which means many still rely heavily on stairs. By contrast, the Marquis Theatre offers convenient access by escalator and elevator from inside the New York Marriott Marquis. Visitors can also reach the auditorium by escalator from the box office area facing Broadway.
The theater is located on the third level of the hotel and seats 1,611 people, with about 1,000 seats in the Orchestra and about 600 in the Mezzanine. Despite its large size, the seating layout is designed so that the stage feels easy to see from throughout the auditorium.
The Marquis Theatre is also known for its thoughtful accessibility features for guests with disabilities as well as for performers. Wheelchair users can enter through elevators inside the hotel, and the theater layout helps guests move through the venue more comfortably.
Accessible seating areas are available in the Orchestra section for wheelchair users and their companions. Backstage, the theater provides spacious dressing and costume areas, creating a practical environment for large-scale productions.
Safety and comfort unique to a theater inside a hotel
Because the Marquis Theatre shares access with the New York Marriott Marquis, it is especially convenient for visitors arriving by car or taxi. Unlike many Broadway theaters, where audiences exit directly onto the street after a performance, guests here can wait comfortably indoors.
Being inside the hotel also adds a sense of ease and security, which can be reassuring for visitors seeing a show in Times Square. This combination of accessibility, convenience, and comfort has made the Marquis Theatre a popular choice for audiences from around the world.
The New York Marriott Marquis is also home to The View Restaurant & Lounge, New York City’s only revolving restaurant and lounge. Located on the upper floors of the hotel, it offers American cuisine, drinks, and panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. It is a memorable option for visitors who want to enjoy dinner or cocktails before or after a Broadway show. Please check the latest hours before visiting, as restaurant schedules may change.
