The Plot / Summary of Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Born in communist East Germany, a young boy named Hansel lived with his mother after she drove away his abusive father. His only escape was the rock music that drifted across the Berlin Wall.

As he grew older, Hansel fell in love with an American soldier named Luther. To leave for the United States with him, Hansel agreed to undergo gender reassignment surgery and marry Luther. The surgery went wrong, leaving behind what would later be called the “Angry Inch.” Taking a new identity, Hansel became Hedwig and moved to America. But just two days after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Luther left her for someone else.

Hedwig tried to hold on to her dreams. She worked as a babysitter while forming a rock band with a group of Korean army wives. Around this time, she met Tommy, a 17-year-old aspiring musician, and fell in love. But when Tommy discovered her secret, their relationship ended in heartbreak.

Years later, Hedwig found out that Tommy had stolen her songs and turned them into Billboard-topping hits. Furious, she created a new band called The Angry Inch with her partner Yitzhak and toured small clubs across the country, following Tommy’s concerts and seeking revenge.

Eventually, fate brought Hedwig and Tommy together again. An apology and reconciliation seemed possible—until a tragic car accident made headlines and pushed Hedwig into the public eye. Overnight she became a sensation, but what awaited her beyond fame would change everything.
