If/Then – Story
The Plot / Summary of If/Then
Elizabeth, 38, returns to her hometown of New York after a divorce to start fresh. Her lesbian friend Kate gives her the new nickname “Liz,” while Lucas, a bisexual community organizer and old college friend, calls her “Beth.”
As Liz, she enjoys a freer, more spontaneous life. She meets Josh, an army doctor who persistently asks her out, though she initially refuses. At the same time, she reconnects with her old friend Stephen. Through her work with Stephen, Liz helps Lucas meet David, and the two begin a relationship. Eventually, Liz spends a night with Josh, becomes pregnant, marries him, and becomes a mother of two – but her journey is far from simple.
As Beth, she chooses the path of a career-driven woman. She is invited by Lucas to join a protest against a development project, but instead reconnects with Stephen, who appoints her as project leader. Their professional relationship grows closer, and they share a kiss, but Stephen, who is married, decides to end their relationship. Heartbroken, Beth turns to Lucas for comfort, and after spending a night with him, she discovers she is pregnant with his child – a decision that changes everything.
