The Plot / Summary of In the Heights

Set in Washington Heights, a tough neighborhood at the northern tip of Manhattan.

Usnavi, who runs a small grocery store, looks after Abuela Claudia, the elderly woman who has cared for him since childhood. He dreams of one day living freely in his parents’ homeland, the Dominican Republic. But with his modest means, that dream feels out of reach…

One day, his childhood friend Nina returns to the Heights after completing her first year at Stanford University, one of America’s top schools. Coming from this poor neighborhood to attend such a prestigious university made her a local star, and her parents have sacrificed everything to support her education.

Meanwhile, Vanessa, the girl Usnavi secretly loves, works at a hair salon caught in business troubles, and Benny, who works at Nina’s parents’ business, has big ambitions of his own.

Nina struggles with the pressure of not being able to continue her studies, weighed down by the expectations of everyone around her.

As beloved shops close down and familiar streets begin to change, the community faces uncertainty. In the midst of it all, Usnavi makes a life-changing decision about his own future.
