A Long-Running Hit Musical Celebrating Its 25th Anniversary in 2010
In 2010, the long-running hit musical returned to Broadway to celebrate its 25th anniversary!
Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel *Les Miserables*, the show has captivated audiences worldwide, including Japan where it has a devoted fan base. In 2012, the film adaptation starring Hugh Jackman was released, and in Japan it quickly surpassed 4.1 billion yen in box office revenue within seven weeks, setting the record as the highest-grossing musical film at the time. The story draws from real historical events, portraying the lives of young revolutionaries who rose against the government to fight for a better France, women suffering from the illnesses of the era, men working as officers and government officials, and factory women struggling to provide for their families. Les Miserables delivers a moving and realistic depiction of human perseverance and hope.
From 1987, Les Miserables ran for 16 years with 6,680 performances, the second-longest run in Broadway history.
On Broadway, Les Miserables once achieved an extraordinary record, running for 16 years from 1987 with 6,680 performances – the second-longest run in Broadway history. After a revival from 2006 lasting just over a year, the show closed again in 2008. A newly staged production has since been touring across the U.S. for the past two years, directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell. Unlike earlier productions, the iconic revolving stage has been removed, and instead the backgrounds are inspired by the original illustrations drawn by Victor Hugo himself.
This revival also places stronger focus on the struggles of oppressed people in 19th-century France, with new orchestrations moving away from the electronic keyboard sounds of the original. Producer Cameron Mackintosh has emphasized that the staging brings a fresh and more powerful perspective to the timeless story.
The show’s iconic logo – the face of young Cosette – represents not only her character but also evokes the harsh reality of the French Revolution, where many children carried weapons and tragically lost their lives in the conflict.
Les Miserables is the epic story of a convict’s journey to redemption, filled with universal themes of love and hope. Whether you are a fan of the original novel or the acclaimed film, this unforgettable production is one you will not want to miss!

Les Miserables – Story
The Plot / Summary of Les Miserables
Jean Valjean, who had been imprisoned for 19 years, escapes and ends up sneaking into the bishop’s residence of Bishop Myriel. Having faced cold treatment everywhere he went, Valjean’s heart had grown hardened, and he attempts to steal the bishop’s cherished silverware. Easily captured, Valjean is astonished when the bishop not only refrains from scolding him but speaks to him with compassion. Deeply moved, Valjean resolves to cast off his past and live as an honest man.
By 1823, Valjean is hiding his parolee status and has become mayor under the name “Madeleine.” Among the workers at his factory is Fantine, a poor woman struggling desperately to support her 3-year-old daughter.
One day, however, Fantine has a dispute with the foreman, who harbored ill intentions toward her. When Valjean intervenes, he mistakenly believes the foreman’s story, and Fantine is dismissed from the factory.
Four years later, Valjean encounters Fantine again, now reduced to prostitution and gravely ill. Regretful for having cost her the job, Valjean apologizes, but it is too late – Fantine dies, leaving her daughter Cosette behind.
Burdened with guilt, Valjean takes Cosette and flees, finding refuge in a convent in Paris with the help of old Fauchelevent, whose son Valjean had once saved.
Meanwhile, Inspector Javert, who has been relentlessly pursuing the escaped convict Valjean, begins to close in.
Years later, Cosette grows into a beautiful young woman and falls in love with Marius, a student involved in revolutionary movements. With Javert closing in and the French Revolution about to erupt…
