Macbeth – About the Show

Highlights of Macbeth – Must-See Moments

Highlights of Macbeth - Must-See Moments Recognized worldwide as one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, “Macbeth” has been staged many times in Japan, including a 2001 production directed by Yukio Ninagawa starring Toshiaki Karasawa as Macbeth and Shinobu Otake as Lady Macbeth.

The highlight of the Broadway production is Alan Cumming, the acclaimed British actor who won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Laurence Olivier Award for his role as the Emcee in “Cabaret.” In this bold version, he plays every character in the play himself. Known for his distinctive presence and unforgettable performances, Cumming often takes on unconventional roles, from eccentric outsiders to deeply complex characters, and has a unique ability to command the stage.

This is not his first encounter with Shakespeare. He has appeared in several Shakespearean works including Julie Taymor’s “Titus” and “The Tempest,” further honing his craft. His solo performance of “Macbeth” has been hailed as mesmerizing, capturing the audience’s attention from beginning to end.

Alan Cumming’s modern take on Shakespeare’s tragic masterpiece draws theatergoers into a world unlike any other. Do not miss the chance to experience his extraordinary talent live on a New York stage.

Macbeth – Story

The Plot / Summary of Macbeth

The Plot / Summary of Macbeth
The setting is a dimly lit room in a psychiatric ward. Alan Cumming takes on the role of a patient who performs every character from Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth” alone on stage.

Within the quiet hospital room, Cumming transforms with fierce intensity into each of Macbeth’s characters. His shifts are so seamless and powerful that it feels as though the figures are truly possessing him.

As you watch his performance, it creates the uncanny sensation that the audience itself has become a surveillance camera, observing the unraveling mind of a patient descending into madness.
