Discover 21 Brand-New Songs Written for the Stage
Fans of the 1990 film starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts may immediately think of the hit song “Oh, Pretty Woman.” However, the Broadway adaptation features an entirely new score of 21 original songs created just for the musical.
One standout moment comes in the second act with the romantic ballad “You and I,” performed as Vivian and Edward attend the opera together. The piece even incorporates a passage from Verdi’s La Traviata, the classic story of a courtesan who falls in love with a wealthy man – an intentional parallel to Vivian’s own journey. Listening to the original cast recording in advance makes the live performance even more moving and memorable.

Pretty Woman: The Musical – Story
The Plot / Summary of Pretty Woman: The Musical
Edward Lewis, a successful businessman from New York, finds himself lost on Hollywood Boulevard after leaving a friend’s party. While trying to figure out his way, he meets Vivian Ward, a spirited woman working the streets. Curious about her, Edward asks Vivian to guide him back to his hotel, and during the drive they unexpectedly connect. What begins as a simple arrangement leads them to spend the night together at his luxury suite.
Though Edward and Vivian come from completely different worlds, he invites her to be his companion during his six-day stay in Los Angeles. He provides her with elegant dresses and jewelry, and to everyone’s surprise, Vivian transforms into a graceful, sophisticated woman. Edward is drawn to her charm and strength, while Vivian begins to fall for his kindness and integrity. But the six days pass quickly.
On their final day together, Edward offers Vivian money and promises they will meet again. She refuses, choosing her own dignity, and walks away. Once they part, a single question hangs in the air: will fate bring Edward and Vivian back together, or will their love remain nothing more than a brief moment in time?

Pretty Woman: The Musical – Behind the Scenes
From record-breaking romantic comedy to Broadway
The 1990 film Pretty Woman, starring Hollywood icons Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, became one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time.
The story follows a wealthy businessman and a spirited woman from a very different world as they fall in love in a true American Cinderella tale. The movie was a global sensation, ranking number one at the U.S. box office in 1990 and grossing $463.4 million worldwide. To this day, it remains known as the highest-grossing romantic comedy in history.
Transforming a non-musical film into a Broadway production was a challenge, and the creative team added music and spectacle while keeping the heart of the story. Fans especially look forward to Vivian’s glamorous and iconic costumes on stage.
A star-studded cast with Broadway and film acclaim
Pretty Woman: The Musical features an acclaimed cast with impressive theater and film credits. Vivian Ward is played by Samantha Barks, who captured hearts as Eponine in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables. Although she has extensive stage experience in London’s West End and in California, this production marks her Broadway debut.
The role of businessman Edward Lewis is performed by Andy Karl, a three-time Tony Award nominee. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for Rocky (2014) and Groundhog Day (2017), and received a nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for On the Twentieth Century (2015).
Vivian’s friend Kit De Luca is played by Orfeh, a celebrated performer who has also been nominated for a Tony Award. With such a powerhouse cast, audiences can expect dynamic performances and unforgettable chemistry on stage.
A creative team years in the making
After a five-week pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago beginning March 13, 2018, Pretty Woman: The Musical premiered on Broadway with a dream creative team.
The book was co-written by the late Garry Marshall, director of the original film, and J. F. Lawton, who wrote the screenplay. The music and lyrics were composed by Grammy Award-winning artists Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, a songwriting duo known for decades of hit collaborations.
Direction and choreography were led by Jerry Mitchell, a Broadway veteran who has won two Tony Awards – best Choreography for La Cage aux Folles (2005) and Best Director of a Musical for Kinky Boots (2013) – and received four additional nominations for his work.
The team worked closely with Garry Marshall before his passing in 2016, dedicating more than a year to ensure that the beloved story was faithfully and beautifully adapted for the Broadway stage.

Pretty Woman: The Musical – Review
Review by Mugicha:
The stage was absolutely charming
I’m in my twenties and have seen the movie many times, so I could enjoy it even without fully understanding the English. The vocals by Orfeh were powerful and stunning. I really admire her talent in excelling both as a singer and actress.

Review by SAKI.O:
Adorable production
The costumes blended vintage American style with a modern touch, which felt very fresh. The storyline followed the movie closely, but since the songs were completely original, I was a little disappointed. Still, it was a delightful show overall.

Stage door experience for the first time!
After reading reports online, I decided to try stage-dooring myself, and it was incredible to meet the cast so close up! The actors had such a powerful aura, yet they were so kind and approachable, even taking photos with me. It was an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend to anyone attending.

Review by Tameike:
Perfect for couples
Some people say the movie is better, and I can understand that, but the musical had its own charm. The interactions between the leads were funny and endearing, especially when the actors looked out toward the audience, adding a unique Broadway feel. The female lead was different from what I had seen online, likely an understudy, but she still had a strong stage presence. Definitely a good date-night show.

Review by “It was okay”:
Honestly, I still prefer the movie. Maybe it’s best to see the musical as something entirely different rather than a remake.
