The Prom – Story

The Plot / Summary of The Prom

The Plot / Summary of The Prom
In a small Indiana town, high school student Emma is in a relationship with her classmate Alyssa McCalla. As a young lesbian couple, they dream of attending their senior prom together.
However, the school administration refuses to let them participate, insisting that the traditional dance must only allow male and female pairs. In an even harsher move, the school board and PTA cancel the entire prom rather than allow a same-sex couple to attend.
When the story hits the media, Emma and Alyssa suddenly find themselves at the center of national attention.
Can they overcome the prejudice and discrimination around them? And will the prom, the most anticipated high school event of the year, take place after all?

Behind the Scenes of The Prom

Flower button icon Trivia about The Prom MusicalComposed by the Playwright Behind Disney’s “Aladdin”

The music for this Broadway musical was written by playwright Chad Beguelin, who earned Tony Award nominations for both Best book of a musical and Best Original Score with Disney’s Aladdin, as well as for the 2006 hit The Wedding Singer. A proven talent in the theater world, Beguelin shaped the score of The Prom into an energetic, uplifting, and comedic soundtrack filled with songs that make audiences want to clap along even if they are hearing them for the first time.

The show’s director and choreographer, Casey Nicholaw, is a Broadway veteran known for his international work. In 2015, he traveled to Tokyo to stage and choreograph the Shiki Theatre Company’s production of Disney’s Aladdin. With a career spanning multiple successful productions, The Prom became his first project centered on LGBTQ+ themes, making it a particularly meaningful milestone in his body of work.

Flower button icon Trivia about The Prom MusicalWhat is a Prom?

The title Prom comes from “Promenade,” the traditional end-of-year high school dance held throughout the United States and Canada. Unlike other regions where schools organize frequent community events, in North America Prom Night or Sadie Hawkins Night often serves as the single most anticipated social celebration of the school year.

Attendance is optional, but students are typically expected to attend with a date, making it a milestone filled with anticipation and nerves. In the weeks leading up to the event, school hallways buzz with conversations like, “Who asked whom to prom?” or “Did she say yes?” Depending on the school, the prom can be hosted in a decorated gymnasium or in an upscale venue such as a rented banquet hall.

The tradition also brings financial pressures. Students rent tuxedos or gowns, purchase accessories, and often book a limousine for transportation. These costs, combined with the social expectations, make prom a culturally significant and emotionally charged milestone for teenagers and their families across North America.

The Prom – Review

Nametake:

An Emotional Musical

At first glance the lead didn’t seem remarkable, but once they started singing you could tell they were a true Broadway performer. The story itself felt a little mixed for me, but I can see how it resonates in America. Parents might find themselves in tears!

Kimikimi:

So Nostalgic!

The relationship between the two women was portrayed so beautifully. It reminded me of my own youth when I had feelings for an older girl but never said anything. Watching this made me think maybe I should have written her a letter back then!

Mina China:

Truly Moving

The Prom isn’t just about a lesbian couple, it’s about learning to accept others. The mix of humor and heartfelt themes made it a very thought-provoking and accessible show.

Travel1002:

My Impressions

This was my first time seeing a Broadway musical centered on a lesbian storyline, and the ending was powerful and surprising. I hope more productions like this will be staged around the world.

GOOD:

Made Me Laugh and Cry

The opening group of four characters was hilarious. During my visit they even slipped in political jokes tied to the ongoing election, which felt very bold and very American. It’s the kind of humor you only get on Broadway. It made me wish more theaters elsewhere would take similar creative risks.
